    18d. Litmus test. Litmus is paper strip. Not basic is acid.
    23a. Zaire and Japan essentially flipped out gives Azerbaijan, which is a central Asian state.
    6d. Dr=Dr. Mother is ma. Almost click is tic(k).Hence clue is dramatic
    1a. Overwhelming appetite is yen. Hungry possessing endless is h....y. hence hyena is the clue.

      Flipping does give b and i toi think its how the setter intended but tbats a treasure hunt trick and not cryltic crossword trick imho.

      But as CV used to say, an occassional trick may be allowed and should be used sparingly.
