  1. 17A. IMHO, exi(s)ted.Ex(is)ted must have been a typo..

    1. Thought so. We have occasionally got S from saint in addition to St. But still a typo in the solution- T should be outside the bracket.

    2. Thats the point i wish to make

    3. @Gemini, your comment itself had a typo in the typo you wanted to correct. Of course, your point is clear. And a correction in the solution is in order. πŸ‘

    4. Sir, i didn't understand where is the typo in the typo -)?

    5. {EXI{ST}ED} is the typo in the solution given.
"Ex(is)ted" is what your comment says.

  3. Vladimir is seen along with his NEPALI friend in his hotel room in ALGERIA
watching the SPAGHETTI western, The Good, The Bad and The UGLY.
NONE would have believed that he would come in contact with a MAHARANI.
And that she would become the woman of his DREAMS.
And that he would disregarding several ALERTS fall in a PONZI scheme devised by her.
    And what happened next?
He learnt a lesson: A LITTLE LEARNING is a dangerous thing.

    1. We used to see just Ambassador and Fiat and the occasional Contessa on Vizag roads in 70s.

    2. Not just Vizag- all over India, except for an occasional model of Standard Motors.

    2. What about band in the clue?
'Encourages a boy "band" touring Spain'

    3. A{B{E}TS}
E for Espana, BTS for boy band

  6. 12A Encourages - ABETS
I am not convinced with the annotations provided so far, or even with mine.
@conrad @12:19 says E for Espana while the clue has Spain which leads us to ES.

Here is my not so confident take.
    Encourages - ABETS
    a(A) boy(B) band(T) touring Spain(ES)

Now T for and is where I have a problem. T-Band seems to be a famous music band as gathered from Google sources.

      E for spain.

    3. Yes, Conrad's anno looks to be correct, though I did not know about BTS

    4. Then 'touring' 's role as a containment indicator is also questionable. Which way is it pointing? Container or contained?

    5. I too checked in wiki.....sree sree and Paddy's stands were correct. we know BTS well. But I haven't expect the boy band connected the word play. I have annotate as (A)(B)(ET)(S). Considered ET for Band. and S for Spain. But in wiki...ES is the right abbr. for Spain. Thanks to Hypatia for a challenging word play and intersting grid.

  8. In 5dn - what is the role of heard? Shed beat leads to bed sheat - to bed sheet is homophone. Hence heard?
    Can someone explain?

Otherwise nice grid from Hypatia. Me solving after 10 days (golu & all).
My fav - DHARMA, SPAGHETTI, SWARTHY.
    Thanx
