  1. Re your comment at 25a: You've a point there!

As a clue-writer I think hard in such situations and in this instance I would have plumped for your version.

  2. Col,

    27 - Flattery for bemused Daulat, retired champ (9) - {ADULAT*}{ION<-}

Champ mean No.1= NOI. How is retired a reversal ind, or does NOI mean something else?

  3. Col,

Can you tell me what 'ipzah' is?

  4. Just moved to Kottayam in Kerala and now have the Hindu crossword as part of my morning routine. Found your blog really helpful over the last couple of weeks to acclimatise me to the Hindu's style (the clue structure is a bit different to the Guardian (UK) which I was used to) - but thanks to your tutelage have just completed my first entire puzzle - thanks. 5. For Raghunath

'Ipzah' is what you get to read when you see the YEZDI monogram upside down. I had noticed this interesting fact some twenty years ago or so.

    Did I get it right?

  6. @Raghunath,
Retired is the reversal indicator in 27A.

As regards IPZAH, richlas has given you the correct answer. YEZDI is embossed on the removable plate on either side of the fuel tank, what a lot of YEZDI users would do is unscrew this monogram rotate it through 180 degrees and refix it and it would read IPZAH, I too had done it for a number of years on my bike.

    Dave,
Welcome to the world of The Hindu Crossword enthusiasts. You could also join the Orkut community where the Hindu CW is solved giving each member a chance to post three solutions. Check it out at http://www.orkut.co.in/Main#Community.aspx?cmm=770537
The only point to note in this CW is that we have four different setters who provide the CW's in a fixed cycle during the weekdays of the month, the Sunday CW is from the Everyman CW of the Guardian group which you must have noticed.

  7. To put the record straight: Five composers.

They are (in alphabetical order, with puzzles per cycle in brackets): Gridman (6), M. Manna (7), Neyartha (2), Nita Jaggi(10), Sankalak (6)

  8. Col,

I knew what ipzah was, only wanted to know whether you knew, as you had written about the Yezdi rally yesterday.

I too noticed this in the late 70s, hence my post.
