Col,
ReplyDeleteWhat's TENNESSEAN?
@Raghunath,
ReplyDeleteAs per definition a TENNESSEAN is a person who lives in the state of Tennesse in USA. Even God may not know what NJ intended here!!!
As a Tennessean myself, please allow me to tell you that I absolutely failed to see the answer myself, much to my chagrin. But I'm pleased to see that even the experts got stumped on it.

Hello, Col.
ReplyDelete9 - Sufficiency to always hold out, the queen has articles packed in the last month (8) - A{DE{QU}{A}C}Y
Does "always" yield to "AY" normally, or in this case we have to assume so?
@Aim,
ReplyDeleteYour guess is as good as mine
AY stands for Always as per cryptic crossword definitions link at http://www.mythic-beasts.com/~mark/random/indicators
ReplyDeleteAYE, EER and ERE also are used for always. I wish I know the abbreviation for all these like ER for Elizabeth Royale (for Queen) etc.
Colonelji, is there a book or link you use for cryptic crossword definitions? I'm interested in learning how these short cuts are derived for each definition.
14dn TENNESSEAN: a form of address i.e., what you would call a person from Tennessee.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the clue goes, I think something is missing there - suspect some hanky-panky (to use Vasi Sir's assertions sometime ago with regards to some of Mr. Manna's clues) going on here.
PM's address gives TEN (for 10 Downing Street) so seems like a clue constructed by a Brit originally and then something got lost in "translation" and that is why the def is missing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Sembhayya,
ReplyDeleteI don't know of any link for cryptic CW definitions, whatever I know is from years of CW solving.
However you will get some good ideas from the first page at this link which is moderated by Mrs PP
