  2. I guess
    Not beginning to cook, gives (-r)OAST and seven gives S to make it plural

  3. 19 AC: AM + CADE + Y

    Col,
    Could you explain how railway fits into the answer for 17 AC?

  4. Also why overheard in 17 AC, when no homophone involved?

  5. @Ramya, I think the 'L' comes from railway. Some train lines, such as Chennai's MRT system, are elevated, and are referred to as 'el' lines, or 'l'.

    As far as I know this is how the anno works. 'El' is used very widely to describe the elevated metro train lines in Chicago, where I study.

  7. @Ramya,
    I am sorry I have no answer for the Railway!!

    @Aash,
    You are adding to the confusion, there is no L in the answer!!!

    @TJC
    I think you can conjure up a CW where all the clues are dedicated to produce only NJ !!!!

    @Bala & Aim,
    Thanks for your suggestions

  9. Col,

    In my opinion:

    19 - Abandoned young one in the morning on the track of a school (7) - ACADEMY Anno pending
    A{CADE}M Y, where Y is the anno for Railway, as similar as L is the anno for Railway as in railway lines, in:

    17 - Layman overheard railway spies to the left (4) - {L}{AIC<-}

    14 - Nearly seconds before, Royal Challengers left in time for a film in the Spanish city (9) - BA{RC}{E{L}ON}{A} Annotation of BA beats me.

    BA could be BC{-CKS}, nearly seconds. Before would indicate the first entry of the clue.

    26 - MON and Scotsman? MON is man in Scots termi...

    I am just trying to think how NJ's mind works, nothing more.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Well as for how NJ's mind work:

    Nearly= All But: AB
    Secnods -> Backs, rev. indicator.

    Or 'BA' is second alphabet in Arabic. (it's in Hindi too, but not second.)
    So Seconds: BAs
    Nearly BAs: BA.

  11. @Col: But Ramya was referring to 17A, which does have an 'L'...

  12. @Aash,
    Sorry my mistake, as above it she was talking of Academy which had track in it
