  1. Col,
For 24D anno, could it be U= Film, G=Man(Gent)?

  2. Ramya,
With NJ anything is possible. G for gent is okay but asking a solver to connect U with film is a little far fetched though the possibility exists

  3. Col Sir,
1AC a politician is from Conservative party in Britan

  4. CV, DO YOU HAVE THE LINK TO THE LOOOOOOOONG LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS WHICH YOU ONCE POSTED ON THIS SITE. I DOWNLOADED THE LIST IN WORD FORM.
THIS LIST IS VERY USEFUL FOR DICIPHERING NJ'S CROSSWORDS.
U IS LISTED AS FILM IN THIS LIST

  5. Suresh,
    You are in CAPS again!!
    Svemuri,
A conservative party member is a TORY and not a CON

  7. Suresh,
I am not able to guess the import of your comment and the intent of your mind.
I have a copy of that list right on my machine.
But I have already observed that that list is undependable. Somewhere the name of a UK composer is mentioned therein and I have high regard for him, but the problem is not his: that list was expanded by some individuals (I know not who) and that is the reason why it is not to be trusted. Materials from the Web, including Wikipedia, are to be taken with all the contents of the salt cellar.
Honestly, I would not recommend the big list: U for film is nonsense. And there are many other horrors there.
Coming back to your cmment: if anyone wants it I can send a copy. Ask me at chaturvasi (AT) yahoo (DOT) com

  8. Rep. is for Republican
    Con. is for conservative
These may appear within brackets after names of elected representatives.
    Each is a short form.
A member of the Conservative Party or politican cannot lead to con.
Today I was staying away from Comments but somehow I have been drawn in!
No problem, though. Only danger is the comments can be endless.

  9. Just imagine: politican leading to BJP or DMK because these do appear after names of members in parliamentary reports.

  10. You are right CV. My comment was not important. I looked at the list only to figure out how NJ framed the clue. I agree with you that U cannot stand for movie. I guess this is not worth further discussion

  11. Col,
27 - Gain support of an English national still recovering without any money (6) - {E}{N}LIST(-s)*

This anno does not fit. STILL has one S and you have removed it. If we reomve L it figures, but without any money would mean remove the two Ls?

    18 - Garden plant in Spain is cut without an individual at the end of the day (5) - {PANS(-i)*}{Y}

    Anagrind= Is cut?

Wonder if a list will help Suresh, as any abbr. is fine in NJs case?

  12. Well Raghunath, List is the source of the problem here too.

  13. Actually Pansy should be annotated a little differently.
    {PAN} (-IS) {S} (for Individual or single){y}

  14. Thanks Ramya for starting off today's lively discussions

  15. Garden plant in Spain is cut without an individual at the end of the day (5)

Whatever the anno, at the end of the day the fact remains that NJ uses way too much of 'at the end of the day'. We could have a contest for which of her wordplay devices occurs most, um, regularly.

  16. Not sure how Angry can be defined as Storm (14D). Presume it should be Anger

  17. Vikram,

    You are absolutely right!

    Similarly,

4 - One may come back to consciousness after a surgery (6)

'Come back to consciousness' is to REGAIN.

'One may come back to consciousness' cannot lead to a verb but only a noun such as REGAINER.

The Col in his comment was perhaps making this point.

  18. Re 19
'Descendent' for SCION appears to be wrong.
For, 'descendent' is 'going down', 'descendant' is 'an offspring'.
He is a descendant of the Father of the nation.
I am suffering much because my star is in the descendent.

  19. As usual NJ has kept us busy all day

  20. It could be intentional, Suresh - a 'return compliment' for all the barbs.

  22. 10ac Cleaners to put off guys
    This is not idiomatic English.
If we have a bore in our company, what we do?
    We put him off!
Do we say "We put off him"?
We can only be sorry over this sad situation.

  23. My my the comments have gone on till this morning, God bless NJ for keeping us busy throughout the day
