  1. Had trouble with only two clues ( 1 Ac and 27 Ac)

    Across

1 The outcome of such erosion is plain (9)

Could not get this until I opened the blog.

10 A tear in a printed sheet indicates extraction (9)

Besides the word insertion, a good play on the word 'extraction' which also means lineage.

    11 A solitary crustacean (6,4)

    Nice one.

17 Materials used as inner surface to garments (7)
    19 Less expensive (7)

    straight giveaways !

    20 Has snow settled? (4)

    Has = owns. Liked this.

22 With no top man, male stress may result (10)

    Good anagram.

26 Issues of Japanese immigrants found in U.S. quarter (5)

Got this through a Google search.

27 To place players on stage for greater visibility is to err foolishly (5)

Riser - a new word for me, although put as a wild guess.

28 Stripped down? Anything but! (7-2)

Liked this too. This English, as I have been saying, is a 'phunny' language. When chicken is stripped, we call it 'dressing' !

    Down

1 Chap directed to be informer of a beautiful girl (5)

Even the not-so-beautiful ones could blush peach-pink upon being referred to as such.

BTW, how does the 'E' here represent an informer - 'Ear' or 'Eavesdropper' ?

2 The allegation made in a store’s found to be false (9)

Does assertion of one's viewpoint have necessarily to be an allegation?

5 Blissful state where Ivan ran wild (7)

    Cute anagram.

16 Weighed down with iron indeed? (9)

Good play with 'iron' which also means 'press'.

  2. Hi Richard,
Riser is a frequent entry in CW's however this meaning I think has appeared for the first time

  3. This will be my last Hindu crossword for a couple of months - heading back to England for Christmas and not back in Kerala until January. Have really enjoyed this blog which has helped me master the various styles of the compilers (although NJ still eludes and infuriates me). Looking forward to catching up with you all in 2010!

  5. Hi David,
You could still access this blog from home though and in case you are not aware an interactive version of the HINDU crossword is available as an application on ORKUT as well as FACEBOOK, it was made by one of the HINDU CW followers, in case you are interested I could send you the link.
MERRY CHRISTMAS and A HAPPY NEW YEAR to you in advance and enjoy your holidays

  6. Thanks Col - I have the facebook link, and tried it last time I was back in the UK - but think I must be an autistic luddite, as I need to have pen to paper, and it just seems completely alien trying to do it anywhere other than on my terrace! Think I will have a few weeks relaxation with The Guardian crossword (so much easier and with no connotations of warmer climes)
    Seasons Greetings to all

  7. David,
Same case here, I too enjoy doing the print version, in fact my paper boy did not deliver today's HINDU and I had to wrestle with Manna through the internet.
    Ciao
