  1. Gridman may have intended "Soak to the skin" to be the def, and DR to be simply derived as an abbr. for 'dear' but it seems you have taken 'skin dear' to be a strip indicator to get DR from 'dear'.

    Our Indian films are full of scenes where the heroines get drenched even on a hot summer day.

    Gridman seems to have been in the sidelines on a film shoot.

  3. Children alone are cared for in these homes (10)

    I believe a bit of crypticity is involved in the above clue.

    Orphans are those left lonely or left behind by one or both parents so "Children alone" can be interpreted as children rendered lonely.

  4. The dictionary meaning for 'sere' is 'dry and withered'.

    It might be a poetic word, not one in everyday usage.

    I can remember when I first came across this word for the first time. Like so many other words.

    It was in a poem by Ben Jonson in my school textbook (back in the late 1950s).

    Here is the poem (taken from the Internet):

    It is not growing like a tree
    In bulk doth make Man better be;
    Or standing long an oak, three hundred year,
    To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:
    A lily of a day
    Is fairer far in May,
    Although it fall and die that night—
    It was the plant and flower of light.
    In small proportions we just beauties see;
    And in short measures life may perfect be

  5. This long post, entered in response to a query since deleted, is retained as it makes a point and quotes a beautiful, meaningful poem.

  6. 'Sere' in the poem I presume refers to the meaning 'withered' rather than dry as dry appears by itself.

  7. Strumpets yesterday and wenches today - not the most flattering descriptions of womanhood. Gridman does appear to like his "olde english", what with sere turning up as well!

  8. D6: I think the anno can be a bit different .

    Expedition in the manner of the French metropolis going round river (8) - {A}{LA}{C{R}ITY}

    Expedition -> Alacrity
    in the manner of the (french) -> A La
    metropolis going around river -> C{r}ity

    Your annotation does not appear to be any different from what I have given

  10. Sorry that did not come out right,...

    I meant {A la}{C{R}ity}

    Where the definition is only "Expedition"
    instead "Expedition in the manner of"

    In the manner of = A la http://www.thefreedictionary.com/a+la

    Ok, I get the point, I have indicated 'in the manner of' also as part of the definition, which should have been Expedition only

  12. I had managed to solve many clues early this morning, while a few others had bugged me.

    Logging in late in the evening after being away from the desk for long, nice to see this blog get more and more interactive as each day passes.

    All this would look like a battle of wits for a novice here. But everything is without any malice and is all fun.

    When all is said and done, it is great to have the final say from David.

    Keep it up, friends!

    Richard
