GRID
Could solve most clues pretty fast today.
ReplyDelete21 across - Chandigarh was clever, since one always thinks of longish foreign city names.
6 down - Euphronios totally evaded me despite the anagram.
19 down- Food supplies in Libya are for the Germans (7) - {L}{AR}{DERS}
Your query: Where has the E gone?
Could it be La for Lybia and 'are' for the phonetic description of the letter 'R'? Imagination running riot, perhaps.

I agree 21ac clue for CHANDIGARH is handled very well and that the surface reading is also quite smooth.
ReplyDeleteI wish that the same care is bestowed on all clues.
I had got 21D as CRE (-W)ED.
ReplyDeleteHi Suresh,
ReplyDeleteI think ou are right it is CREED and not CREDO, though both of them fit the bill, definition wise
Re CREDO/CREED
ReplyDeleteI looked up the slot and, as I suspected, it has "double unches" - something which standard crossword grids avoid. Because of that, there is this confusion.
If it had not been double unches, this kind of dual answers may not crop up.
Why does NJ seem to think that DE is "the" in french? It is "OF". He did it in 2 clues today and it is rather confusing to us francophiles!

ReplyDeleteThe compiler is a 'she'.

19 Down - I think LAR (Libyan Arab Republic) is used for Libya and "are" has nothing to do.
ReplyDeleteThat seems to be a plausible explanation for LAR (19 down). Thanks.

Sembhaya,
ReplyDeleteYou are right
David,
My sympathies are with you, anyhow no more NJ for a month after Friday
