GRID

  1. I haven't done this crossword and my answers are from the clue sheet above without the use of the grid.
I bet you would have had them with more time.
20 - No longer played one’s part as demanded (7) - EN{ACTED} Anno pending EX ACTED

  2. With the sole exception of 5 down, completed the crossword by 7 am.

5 across - Serious as security deposit (7)

EARNEST, which means both 'serious' and 'security depostit' (more commonly EMD 'earnest money deposit'). I hope I got it right.

    11 across - A river in South Argentina (5)

Got this after a Google search. Who would expect a river to bear such a name? Possibly, it means 'Black River'.

15 across - The one mat ruined by insect infestation

Since 'moth-eaten' is a compound word, a hyphen between 4 and 5 would have been appropriate.

5 down - Battle to establish a male line

    This has bugged me too.

  3. 20 down - Just as CV did, I have put it as 'EXACTED'. I missed it in the above answers.

  4. 21 - One who acts routinely, giving name to gold love apple (9) - {AU}{TO}MATON Anno pending

I think this is N (name) on this side of AU (gold) and TOMATO (love apple).

  5. Only some compilers like Sankalak, Neyartha and Gridman are meticulous about indications for the lights, whether they are hyphenated or unhyphenated, etc. etc. The same word may be hyphenated or not as per the part of speech but such niceties are beyond some compilers.

  6. 2  - Gets to hit somehow with deceitful craftiness (7) - SLEIGHT* How did T become L? Printers Devil?

I don't think it's a printing mistake, for "Gels to hit" or "Gets to hil" doesn't make sense. Such mistakes arise out of sheer carelessness on the part of the composers and also their being impervious to seeing errors in their work in print.

  7. Re the same clue. What do you think - that "to" is redundant there or "to" is a legit connector?

  8. Again, not using the grid, but a little bit of googling foloowing some vague recollections
and without the use of crossword pattern / anagram search software:

EL ALAMEIN (anag of a male line, I think)

The G in your word configuration now needs a relook.

  9. I find that you have the correct answer at 13 ac with a final E (a checked letter for 5d) except that the given pattern against the clue has G instead of the required E at position 7.
This proves that I did not use any electronic aid, does it? LOL.

  10. I said I didn't solve this crossword.

Yes, the final E at 13ac is correct, but the answer as such is OBTRUSIVE, anag. of butisover, 'elaborate' from 'overelaborate' being the AInd.

John's answer from elsewhere reproduced here.

And as the solution is a long one and as it has the masterly touch and as the device used is not in accordance with the whole tone and tenor of the compiler's oeuvre, the provenance of the clue is in the realm of speculation.

  11. When the cat is away, the mice will play!

And when one of the players is an old bandicoot, fed on the nicest of tidbits to be found in kitchens and sewers and known for its wily ways to avoid any traps that might have been laid, the action is bound to be all the more domineering!

  12. @Chaturvasi
You are, of course, a cat at this.Got all annos and filled the blanks without the grid

  13. Cat-and-mouse game going on here, eh?

Col, when you were at the golf course, you must have certainly heard of Tiger Woods having survived a road crash.

  14. @CV

13 across - Try OBTRUDING instead of OBTRUSIVE. See if you can solve 5 down. E?, A?A?G?N. Just a suggestion. I could be wrong.

  15. Hi all,
Thanks fo keeping the blog active. My answers today were filled in without the paper as I left at 5:30 AM, and I hate doing the CW without paper and pencil, thats why so many mistakes etc etc. Will have a look at the paper now that I am back.
The tournament was nothing much to talk about as I did not fare too well, the only consolation being that as I have started the game just about 18 months ago, for that period of practice I seem to be improving, the down part was that I lost 6 balls in the various hazards on the course!!!
    @Richard,
No I did not hear of Tiger Woods car crash, hope he was not injured!
    @ Chaturvasi,
Don't know how I missed out on EL ALAMEIN having studied it in Military History, must be because I was in a hurry to get to the Golf Course, I had to be there by 6 AM. I was foxed by the G I had put in.

    ReplyDelete
  16. OBTRUSIVE and EL ALAMEIN are correct. I don't know from where I got the G in there!! must have been looking elsewhere, thats the problem of not having the paper

    ReplyDelete
  17. Got it, though I entered ODURATE for 13A I actually had OBTRUDING that's where the G came from

    ReplyDelete
  18. Vow! Solving the CW without the newspaper and posting it before 6 AM! That is what I would call commitment.

  19. Considering the handicap, the effort was not bad although it did not carry the usual hallmark of quality

  20. And Chaturvasi sir, the wily old cat spotted the anagram in 13 AC. I was puzzled by the 'overelaborate' word as it did not fell with the def and the answer. Credit MM for a good clue.

  21. I meant gell (fell was a type)
