For three days in a row Gridman has been using the "Not exactly" construct and I still don't get the hang of it. Does anyone know?
ReplyDeleteNot exactly my cup of tea!!
ReplyDelete@Bhavan:
ReplyDeleteNot exactly in my mind is a slightly lazy way of pointing out that the definition is at some tangent to the clue's word play when looking at the surface reading. I think it is not often one can make it work well because the not exactly should, upon solving the word play, give you an aha moment and a smile right away. After your comment I did see that, as usual, Shuchi has a small write up on it - you had commented on it as well in that article. Anyway, she gives an example where it looks good -
Independent (Phi): Man involved with dunes? Not exactly! (8)

Thanks Veer, now its coming back slowly : )
ReplyDelete4D is given as DD.Is the second meaning multiplied by for X? Is it accepted?
ReplyDelete18A-I filled it in as comic pages and got stuck. But still pages could be correct!
Padmanabhan,
ReplyDelete'2 X 4' is read as '2 into 4' or '2 multiplied by 4'
I haven't come across 'Wonder mongering' (8) as a hyphenated term in any dictionary. Possibly an obsolete word (or is it two words?). Not in common usage to the best of my knowledge.
ReplyDeleteHere is some imaginary conversation:
ReplyDeleteMe to Gridman: You were hospitalised recently. Are you well now?
GM: Not exactly.
Me: The crosswords appearing this week were composed by you recently?
GM: Not exactly.
Me: So you use "not exactly" quite often?
GM: (I am not sure whether he will retort with
Exactly or not exactly!!!
Good One :)
ReplyDelete'Not exactly' signals a pun to me. Of course, some puns are better than others! Should 28A should have "Not exactly!" in the clue? Not exactly!
ReplyDeleteI had "Funny Pages" for 18A, seems to fit.
