ReplyDeleteIt should have been 'potentially' for the clue to make sense that we need to anagram "with screen" for a public school (winchester)
3 - Possibly an English grandmother (4) - (~an){ANN}{E} ? Anno pending.
ReplyDeleteST ANNE - mother of Mary/grandmother of Jesus?
Sandhya,
ReplyDeletePossible, but a bit too far fetched to correlate.
@Sandhya anything is possible :)
ReplyDeleteTwo more days. This run of Manna's has seen more of Hyde than Jekyll.
3 is perhaps an anagram of Nan and E. The def would be silent.
ReplyDelete25A I read it as a Telescopic clue
ReplyDelete25a is not a T clue.
ReplyDelete'neé' is born. Used for women.
'né' is also born. Used for men.
I don't profess to know French and I can't say if MM intended this.
Many clues in any MM series use questionable devices, though are simply superb.
Maharaja is simply great!!
ReplyDelete3 - Possibly an English grandmother (4) - (~an){ANN}{E} ? Anno pending.
ReplyDeleteST ANNE - mother of Mary/grandmother of Jesus?
I thought of it as an anagram (possibly) of 'an En(glish)' with grandmother as def.
Kishore
ReplyDeleteYou have read MM's mind correctly!
It seems that there are several routes to the same answer!
We might be scratching our heads after having got the answer, without knowing which road we took.
Kishore,
ReplyDeleteThe whiff of Feni seems to have given you the power to read someones mind!!
But why should ANNE be grandmother why not mother, sister, aunt etc?
ReplyDeleteBeen following this blog to cross verify answers the last month of so.
ReplyDeleteI did not get the connection between "ratings" "seamen". Got the anno, but not the connection, hence the query.
Thanks,
-VP
Venkatesh, 'Rating' refers to a person enlisted in the British Navy. I suppose Manna has extrapolated it to refer to 'Seamen' as 'Ratings'
ReplyDeleteThanks Vikram, understood after the explanation.
ReplyDeleteBTW, would like to take this opportunity to say:
ReplyDeleteThanks Colonel for the daily posting of answers with Annos for all clues. It has been really helpful especially for a rookie like myself.
Thanks VP
ReplyDeleteMy God! That "RATINGS" had me completely stumped. Thanks for the explanation, Vikram.
