15 - Two men of a bygone age (9) - VICTORIAN {VICTOR}{IAN}
ReplyDeleteI first put in EDWARD-IAN, till Veer dropped in at 12a
Could not figure out RECESSION. What is touching and yielding about it?
ReplyDeleteTthis is the clue for which we had the answer a few days back !
ReplyDeleteSo logically this answer should have been NEARS?!!
I think the anno for RECESSION is
ReplyDeleteTouching: RE
Yielding: CESSION
Decline: Definition
Maybe. But Re for touching?!!
ReplyDeleteYa Suresh. We came across it quite recently in the Sunday Hindu also. See Jul 10th blogpost.
ReplyDeleteOn yesterday's Sunday puzzle:
ReplyDelete7 ACROSS:Bonnet and boot.(8) I penned in BABYWEAR and then realized my folly. BALMORAL evolved itself from the other adjoining clues.
Phew!! It disproves my dictum: OPTIMISM IS FILLING IN YOUR CROSSWORDS BY A BALLPOINT PEN. Thank God for whiteout pens.
I didn't like REACT at all.
Thanks Col for the picture of TROUSER PRESS. Has any one seen this in any hotel?
5 Across: Locksmith-- BARBER appeared very recently in one of my crosswords with the same clue but the answer was : COIFFEUR. Must be a favourite amongst the compilers?
To think that I was going to write down something ending with PATRIOT for 14D. How naive!
ReplyDeleteRe for touching
ReplyDeleteSudalamani:
Suresh may have a point.
Yes, we may say "The speaker said a few words touching on terrorism", where 'touching on' = regarding.
So, strictly, for RE, we would expect "touching on" not just "touching".
Sorry I was not around whole day as it was the naming ceremony of my granddaughter today, which we conduct on the 28th day. The name is Anvi officially.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the info.
I like short names. These are easy to pronounce and you needn't have to shorten a long one after having given one such. And as it starts with A, it has advantage in alphabetical order.
I was wondering what the word means. I looked up Maneka's book of Hindu names. It does not have Anvi but has
Anvita - reached by the mind; connected with; linked to; understood.
Anviti - following after
My mistake.
ReplyDeleteMy grandaughters name should be AVNI
All the very best to little Avni. May she have the best of everything in this world. She has started on the right foot by having at least one awesome grandpa !
