  1. ESURIENT was clued by Gridman as

Rapacious user I net cleverly (8)

That was in THC 7731 pub. on July 22, 2003 when puzzles did not carry any byline.

That clue was in Everyman 3258 that was reproduced by TH on the date you mention.

So, in its appearance later, it is a case of a setter (Everyman in this case) reusing his clue after a gap of some years.

Everyman that reused the clue was numbered 3376 (THC today).

Internet with its search facilities makes life for setters difficult! And also shows how a man can be wasting his time.

  4. Well, Everyman did not reproduce the same clue. Now I see that there is a slight modification in its later appearance.

  5. Is Everyman one setter or a group of setters? I feel it is more than one.

  6. THC's Sunday Crossword is a syndicated crossword from The Guardian group set by Everyman and appears originally in the Observer. This cryptic crossword, the Everyman, is compiled by Allan Scott.

I am not surprised that you should think that Everyman might be composed by more than one setter.

Though it is thought to be an entry-level crossword, it is not always easy: there are weeks in which it is tough (as UK solvers themselves admit).

However, it is set by the same person.

  8. Col,

You are partly right in your guess.

Allan Scott took over the compiling of Everyman CW for the Observer in 1994. For three decades till then, the task was shared jointly by Dorothy Taylor and Alec Robins. Dorothy passed away in 2009, at the age of 98. [Source: Crossword Who's Who at bestforpuzzles.com]

  10. It was a nice feeling when I saw my name being bandied about in higher circles (hmm..) yesterday.

When we went on top of the Golconda fort in Hyderabad on Saturday, I immediately remembered Kishore in Bangalore and buzzed him.

Thankfully, when I said 'I am on Golconda', he did not mistake it for the bottled stuff. In typically Kishoresque style, he seems to have yahooed the news to THC bloggers from mountain-tops at once.

Leaving 'Hyd' 'n' seek on Monday.

Independence Day greetings to all compatriots.

  14. PENNY RED AND OWEN GLENDOWER made me GO RED and GLOWER.!! Took some time figuring them out as these are new in my dictionary. All of my monday morning sat in my Atelier to the chagrin of wifey-dear, making a SPECTACLE of myself. Even a couple of SINGAPORE SLING shots didn't help any.Didyeall also know that MOTHER'S RUIN is another concoction of gin?

Even HELL'S ANGELS didn't come to my rescue.

Heard of WHAT THE DICKENS!! but not LIKE THE DICKENS.
