ReplyDeleteRe your preamble '9 E's today'.
You could have saved some keystrokes by just saying 'Ease'.
If it wasn't NJ I would have been looking for other birds for JACAMAR.
ReplyDelete26 - Styptic agent found in the metal umbrella (4) - ALUM [T]
ReplyDeleteRemember a stick of these in barber shops in olden days. Also, I remember a bit of it being chucked into a fire for some sort of occult study.

US army divisions (if they do have such units) are capable of multiplication too, given that they have WACs.
Use any or all of the following words in sentences of your own. They must be such that you can drop it in a conversation with a member of your family or a friend within 24 hours:
ReplyDeleteBRASSARD
USANCE
ILAMA
SETACEOUS
BARCHAN
BLARNEY
JACAMAR
CV I do use the word USANCE quite often, but not in the sense it is used in the clue.

ReplyDeleteSorry for your having to do some clean-up.
I have removed a post following Suresh's removal of a post of his.
You may delete thisa s well.
Sometimes during daytime as I lie on my bed idly and turn my head I see a small bird that flits by and settles on the branch of a tree opposite my second-floor window. Keen to look at it, I get up quietly, put on my specs and see, but alas, the bird is gone.
ReplyDeleteThis happens often. The bird is of the size of a sparrow but it does not have a coat like that of aparrows I have seen in our old independent bungalow. It is uniformly of a pale colour.
I have not been able to keep my date with birds.
(from yesterday)
ReplyDeleteRam
See my post after yours late yesterday. Thanks.
Perhaps usance has a prolonged usance in crossword puzzles.
ReplyDeleteSuresh is referring the legal/commercial use of the word. As compared to a 'sight' bill which is payable on presentation, a 'usance' bill is payable are the period specified in the bill. Such bills usually have the words '60 days after ..' etc. I too use this word in that sense.
ReplyDeleteAll other words specified by CV will result in my family committing me to a psychiatric facility.
Get a life, guys! Why waste an hour with this crap. As they say, we men can't fathom a woman's mind!
ReplyDeleteIt's all not BLARNEY when I say that as a USANCE I wear a BRASSARD on my shoulder while in uniform and when I am eating an ILAMA which is SETACEOUS but not like a BARCHAN where JACAMARS do not flit.
ReplyDeleteSee you soon at the Kilpauk facility.
We here are a close-knit group.
ReplyDeleteNew posters are encouraged to put a few words about themselves under THCC members (see top line header with graphic).
Deepak, Kishore, Suresh, Navneeth, Gita and so many others here, never known to each other before this blog, have since become friends and have indeed met though we live in different places.
The brainy mathi and the mindful manasy may please introduce themselves.
I am just a teacher and a returning old-timer to THC. Apologies if I sounded somewhat harsh. It was sad to see the lack of quality in THC nowadays. Some setters are quite annoying with their gibberish and it has become nearly impossible to crack their clues without the aid of computer tools or the internet! I guess times have changed now. Anyway, it is all part of the game. Have fun, guys!
ReplyDeleteNo problem.
ReplyDeleteNo, you didn't sound harsh and I never took it in any adverse sense. In fact, you might have reflected the general feeling.
We are always eager and we too have our opinions on different setters and we are never shy of airing them.
Please do stay with us.
DG1117: Bravo ! Try telling that in front of your family like CV said and you will become my padded-cell-mate, which I trust is what Kilpauk is all about. I have developed some friends in NIMHANS and can probably negotiate a group discount.
ReplyDeleteMsg from Raju who is unable to post here today

With apologies to the nuns in the Sound of Music. and NJ.
Oh, how do you deal with a cryptic puzzle from NJ?
How do you hold an evasive eel in your hand ?
When we're with her we're confused
Out of focus and bemused
And we never know exactly where we are!!
Unpredictable as the Chennai weather
She's as flighty as a fleeting feather
She's a teaser, now she gives you a straight clue, now she gives you a brain-wringer!!
She's a crypton bomb.
She'd outwit any ol' solver like CV
Drive a hornet from its nest
We could all throw a fit,
as she could a whirling dervish out of whirl
She is gentle at times and at other she's wild!
She still fiddles with all her riddles
Thank God, She's only there once a month with her grid-dles
She gives us all a grim migraine!
How do you solve a cryptic puzzle from NJ?

Without appearing to comment on current issues, a certain phrase used in the media today reminded me of Robert Southey's 'After Blenheim'

@Kishore:"I have developed some friends in NIMHANS and can probably negotiate a group discount." :))
ReplyDelete@Raju: Enjoyed the lyrics :P
ReplyDeleteSandy: I have actually been in NIMHANS for professional consultations !
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe someone can break a record for most referrals made
ReplyDeleteSandhya: You know, early morning when you wake up, some songs , thoughts or ideas keep repeatedly ringing in your mind and these are at random. I had heard this song from the Sound of Music years ago and it suddenly got recalled in my mind and it got stuck like a broken record. I immediately related it to NJ and started jotting down. Late at night, I tried to post it, but couldn't and send it across to DG and he obliged by posting it. Thanks for your comments.
ReplyDelete@Kishore(21:22): Now I'm wondering how pre-NIMHANS-Kishore was :P
