  1. 29 - Outsize limousines — actors' dreams! (7,6) - ACADEMY AWARDS [CD]

Such an unusual DD clue. With one part a charade and the other a CD. Some would say this should be a clue for OS CARS and not academy awards.

I didn't solve this crossword. Now that you point it out, I agree that 29a is very unusual clue that defies classification. As you say it is neither a DD nor a charade. It would appear that the clue-writer changed tack at some point and did not complete his intention to its logical end.

  3. I was hoping Col would have used the picture "the death of Marat" by David (!!) as an illustration. It is quite gruesome but i love it and it is actually my screensaver on my phone. First saw it when I wax 10 and living in Bruxelles and it has stayed with me ever since. The original is huge and very impressive. Also the story of Marat and his assassin Charlotte Cordet Is very interesting too.

  4. Colonel I thought it was a DD with references to Oscars and Actor's dreams as the two definitions. But like CV said, its probably hard to classify.

  9. Hi! Just dropped by to share this link:

TOI Chennai is shamelessly attacking TH in its ad. Competition between newspapers is fine, but is this stooping below acceptable corporate ethos?

  10. Can someone throw some light in 7 d - how TO refers books?

  11. Ram @ 10:58

Books = OT (from Old Testament I suppose)
    TO is reverse of OT

  12. 29A should be a nominee for the Oscar for Best crossword clue.

  13. Shyam,
I haven't seen the ad, but having read the article, I'm not able to say for sure that the campaign was attacking TH. It looks like TOI was merely highlighting that their paper is more interesting and has contemporary feel to it (which is true IMO). There's nothing objectionable or offensive is what I feel.

  14. Yes, a couple of days ago I did notice the ad and also noticed what paper was being attacked, as the folded paper is recognisible by the layout and font and type size and so on.

I get and read TH. I also buy and read ToI.

I have no respect for a paper that tries to build up by attacking another - let alone hallowed one but even any mean one.

  15. PS
My comment was written before I clicked on the link given by Shyam. I haven't read it yet. My remarks above are based on my own observations and I stick to my view that one newspaper need not try to grow by attacking another. We know which paper is a marketable commodity with scant respect for editorial superiority; other papers too are treading on the same path - broken by we know which paper.

  16. Let me give voice to an opinion that I have held and also what I notice from observation in the neighbourhood.

Few families buy ToI as the only paper. They buy it as a second paper.

And most make use of the special offer - an annual subscription by which it's less than a rupee per day.

Let the paper be priced as much as the other let's see how many continue to get it - even as a second paper.

  17. Being a Madrasi / Chennai-ite forever regardless of where I currently live, I do have a special place for the paper I grew up with. But I can't find fault with ToI trying to expand their domain into other India markets. And if they can increase readership with lower prices while maintaining profitability it must be pointing to a trend wherein some of the values that today's readers look for in a paper might be changing - for better or for worse is of course the debate. I certainly hope that the Hindu does not have to stoop to conquer some of these minds as the ToI does with the tripe it doles out at its website front page along with its news items. It is a healthy competition and a worthwhile debate on the pros and cons offered up by the competing trends of India's literacy rate being on the rise, while the overall quality of said literacy may be less pervasive than before. And I daresay that the ToI's approach and the Hindu's response is but one manifestation of this competing trend. Anyway, this is a much better place to be than say, in the USA, where even venerated papers like NY Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal etc. face a struggle for survival in this age of instant news, 24 hour news cycle wrought by the ubiquitous internet.

  18. I fell for a devious trap once again! Unscrambled 1A with one glance as 'Adhesive Paste' instead of 'Tapes'. How could I possibly get 'Editor'?!!

  19. Haven't seen either the attack or the defence. However, it is my stand that TOI is the most read paper in the world and I missed it in CBE until they came in. TH is too drab in its presentation and content, as opposed to TOI which is very innovative and creative. So what, if they made an offer of lesser rate for an annual subscription? When I say the TOI, I mean the Bombay edition and not the regional ones. No wonder, TOI is fighting for its position in the near- monopoly of the TH which has become a traditional must in every household in the South. Page for page, column for column, editorial for editorial and article for article, no other broadsheet in the world, not even the London ones can match the TOI. I would not buy the Hindu if not for its crossword and nothing beyond.

No doubt, TH's style of not telling you to go from page 1 , column 2, para 2 to page 4 , column 3 para 1 etc for the same news is a characteristic to be admired.

    Each to his own.

    Much obliged.
