Reg: 18D, the answer and anno is clear, I just have a question on the clue construction.
ReplyDeleteIf I read the charade in linear fashion, it yields {SO} {VI} {PRO}. My question is regarding the component in the clue that tells us to swap PRO and SO (OR) read it in a different order. Does the word "induce" suffice ?
I always had thought if we have to change order, the setter would use words like "after", "followed by" etc ...
Not sure what I am missing.
Thanks.
Maybe the word should be introduce instead of induce
ReplyDeleteVP & Suresh,
ReplyDeleteMaybe MM intended to use 'induce' as an AInd in which case the anno would be
So = SO
six = = VI
in favour = PRO
to induce = AInd
a condition in the deed = Definition = PROVISO*
Thank you Kishore for yesterday's clarification of ness & cape.

ReplyDeletePaddy, you are a witcape to my helpfulcape.
ReplyDeleteDeepak.@14:17. Maybe
ReplyDeleteBut after the Australia muddle I like my theory better. Besides Introduce improves the surface reading greatly.
Thanks Bhavan, for your clarification for yesterday's ROSTRUM.
ReplyDeleteI have almost stopped referring to dictionaries and reference books. In fact, some new phrases that crop up occasionally in the Hindu, I add on to my my Book of Phrases or in a separate Note Book that I maintain. That's the marvel of cryptic crosswords. Each day, one learns and finds new lights.
