  3. 1 a and d have a peculiar relation. Apart from both starting with car, carnauba wax can be used on a car.

  5. Someone wrote to me that a recent crossword had two instances of LONG in the same grid.

    Today's has two CARs.

What do solvers generally think of this? It may be deliberate or accidental or due to lack of an alternative string in the relevant slot after other entries.

What may be noted that one CAR bears no relation whatever to the other.

  6. No problem at all.

Further, since a number shared by a down clue and an across clue is bound to have the same first letter in the answer, there is a 100% probability for the first letter.

But sometimes, even without this, a particular letter dominates the pole position in a word. For eg. today B is at the beginning of 5 words out of 30 (which is itself a large statistic) but this happens without any word forming a NE elbow described in the previous sentence. Statistics is really a devil.
