  1. OT but not off the blog theme...

Nearly rebuke a business school graduate - a number meet the minister (10)

This is a clue in a firstpost crossword 65.

They usually include one or two Indian names/events in the grid and fill the rest of the slots with other words. As for clues some are good and many passable. Some may have problems. There might also be mistakes as it happened with a clue in the very first crossword.

Could anyone annotate the above clue after solving it?

      CHID(-e)A MB R A M

Where does the R come from?

  2. Exactly! I read it as

    CHID[e] A MBA A R AM

and like you I was unable to account for R.

This was the first across clue in the crossword.

What amazes me is the speed with which the daily crossword is produced. For all I know today's crossword may have SUNITA WILLIAMS. The rest of the crossword must be filled up and nearly 30 clues have to be written up and entered in the interactive software - a crossword that is fleeting.

  3. Which is correct?

A number meet the minister [as in the clue above]

    or

    A number meets the minister

    1. 'A number meets the minister' seems intuitively correct in grammar but the semantics don't work. Numbers are not walking talking beings.

'A number meet the minister' looks OK. 'A number [of people] meet the minister [to raise the issue of ill-treatment of business school graduates]'. It doesn't tie in smoothly with the first half of the clue but it's better than the alternative.

  4. Good one today, got stuck in the middle and took a while. Was tempted to put in PEARL for 6D at first sight without bothering about the crossings!
