The bouncer and the dancer - Part 38

Some years back in Nairobi....

Three men were sitting in a mini-conference - Maj. Gen. Jackson, Col. Sam and Lt. Gombu.

The MEET had been organised to EVEN THINGS OUT and give COMFORT to the STRESSED members.

It was decided that a list NEEDS to be PREPARED and kept in safe custody for future use. Gombu REASONS that the list be prepared in duplicate and distributed to two persons as a precautionary measure. Once done they ROSE and departed in different directions.

To unwind Gombu went to the mess and joined the merry makers...

Gombu could not but be gay in such a JOCUND company.

  16. As such I am not a rookie . I am 81 and have been, with varying degrees of success, trying to solve crossword puzzles of this genre for the last sixty years. Today, except 2a and 1d I got everything right. For happiness derived from such an achievement I owe not a little to Gridman.
When I see the exercises being given to rookies in Annotation in thess blog s l feel I am not using my grey cells fully to tease out the reasons that went on in the minds of the setter. I used to be satisfied the grid is filled with plausible clues and assess my effort comparing it with answers which apeear subsequently. I should ponder a little more I think. Thank you.

    2. E OR R is not equal to error.
Margin of cannot be classified as Anagram indicator?

      Delete
  34. 10d is not a reverse anagram.
    sree_sree is spot on.
The clue is: Allowance for slip-ups — e or r?
'Allowance for slip-ups' is the def.
The word play is e or r?
My thinking is e or r is the margin of ErroR
The question mark is for the clue being unusual.
Classification: occasional or special or other or not classfiable

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Then it should have been E and R and not E or R

      Delete
    2. Margin is singular. E or R, either one of them is margin of error. E and R gives margins of error.

      Delete
    3. That's right. Either of the letters is margin of error. Hence 'e or r'.

      Delete
    4. With this explanation, I wonder if the clue would work with just
      E or R?(6,2,5)

    5. without the def: allowance for slip-ups?

    6. Prasad,
Even after your "Tricky as in edgy" comment I could not fully grasp it. Great you were able to get- a really special clue.
      Vasant,
The way you have put it, it has no def. It becomes a rebus type of clue (with letters)

      Delete
    7. Yes.Prasad, Paddy & CV Sir. It would have been a rebus clue a la gegs.

      Delete
    8. But I am sure Gridman will never clue like that. He would always be fair to solvers. While almost all of us got the answer to the clue, only Prasad got the parsing. That is fairness. And the parsing gave us the a ha moment.

  38. 10 down: I could cold solve it immediately as MARGIN OF ERROR - though I wonder whether SLIP UPS should have been only SLIP_UP as there is no indication of any plural situation, in the wordplay--- Allowance(s) for Margin(s) of Error(s). We come across many clues wheren we cannot categorize this type of clues ! I discussed this with CV over the phone and he feels he was right in the cluing the way he did as slip-up or slip -ups are both OK

    A Freudian slip ?

In the latest 1 Across Group ( Cracker) there is a clue PASS BY? (5) similar to this? As the competition is still on, I desist from giving the answer here.

Each compiler comes out with his or her own ingenuous clues and that's the wonder and esotericism of cryptic crosswords !
