Dr RKE's TalePiece

An ESTATE CAR pulled to a stop outside the  bank branch at Park Town one Monday afternoon. The car was unremarkable, except for a tiny insignia of the CBI just above its COWL. Two officers in safari suits, got off and went at a TROT to the manager's cabin. The manager was sprinkling some TABLE SALT on the curd rice packed from home for lunch. He was about to TASTE the first spoonful when the CBI officers ordered him to down the shutters. He had to leave it UNEATEN to attend to the PROBE by the officers.

The CBI officers KICKed OFF the probe by asking for all the files pertaining to the loan account of Lodhra & Co. Lodhra was a TRUCKER with a fleet of national permit lorries. He had increased his fleet size tenfold in 3 months and was suspected to be bringing in the banned gutka from the north, hidden with other cargo. A cursory STUDY of the files showed glaring CONTRARIETies that made it clear to them that due diligence had not been done in granting the loans to Lodhra. The ACCOUNTANT in charge of the Lodhra account was SHUDDERing when called to explain. His TORMENT began when he was asked to explain the lack of securities for the loans, the ignoring of the credit history of Lodhra etc. The biggest BLUNDER was that the guarantor of the loans were the accountant and bank manager themselves, a CRUDE contravention of the norms. The AMBUSHING of the corrupt duo provided UNDILUTED ENJOYMENT to the rest of the bank staff, many of whom had voiced their concerns about the shady transactions. The CBI team then examined the CCTV TAPES and got IMAGINAL evidence that Lodhra had left a small briefcase casually after signing the loan papers. That briefcase was  recovered from the accountant's bank locker in the same bank and it contained gold biscuits and currency notes and WHATNOT.

The successful investigation was a shot in the arm for CBI, a much needed TONIC to boost their sagging morale. But the question is will they be able to follow the leads to the political Godfather (is it a GRAND AUNT) who was backing Lodhra?

    1. I don't think it is a DD. The other part is wordplay leading to cowl.

  8. This is a repeat from a previous comment several months back, a poem I had written on collective names of birds.

The CONVOCATION of EAGLES was a grand affair
With a BAND of JAYS, playing a formal air.
Held next to a PARLIAMENT of OWLS, all wise
Under the close WATCH of NIGHTINGALES, all of one size
When a MOB of EMUS tried to gate-crash
The FLAMBOYANCE of FLAMINGOS made them less rash
A CONGRESS of CROWS had planned the whole event
Engaging a COMPANY of PARROTS, a decision to repent
For a HERD of HERONS was by far a better choice
And a BRACE of DUCKS, their pet errand boys
A BROOD of CHICKEN was needed for the dinner
And a KETTLE of HAWKS used was a real winner

  9. COWL is also the part between the bonnet and windshield of a car and this is the sense in which it is used in the tale

    2. (Can’t imagine why something making high levels of noise with little accomplishment would be called a congress.)

Thank you Dr.RKE. A line in the above link is given. I can not only imagine that, but have also watched it on TV!

    3. Nice to come across IMAGINAL. Thanks Dr RKE for the collective names. Can add to my collections.
How do you conjure up a story within the time span given ? How do you also come up with names that are also appropriate to the profession ? Lodhra, Mundhra , Vardra ?

I always get confused with the pseudonyms . AFTERDARK, Skulldugger, Mover, Ranger etc. Can we not have their real identities as compilers?

      Today's Afterdark was enlightening.

  11. Bibek had made a BLUNDER as we know.

He had been brought in for STEALing the bag. (The IDIOT in a hurry, had taken the wrong one!)

No wonder he was handled in a CRUDE manner. Soon the questioning, the PROBE and WHAT NOT began.

The Captain was in a bad mood. He could not continue to TASTE for his ENJOYMENT the gin and TONIC in front of him. He was twisting the TABLE SALT dispenser in his left hand.

Bibek had to undergo further TORMENT for some more time.

    What happened next?
