  2. Got so engrossed in Dr.Satyen Nabar's novel "A Bolt of Lightning" that I bought on Kindle stores last night that I didn't have time to write a tale. Took a look at Hypatia's offering at 8am and could get only about 50% in the first pass. One of the tougher ones.

  3. A doubt about 26A- As per wordplay,'By is interrupted by 'Fewer' and not the other way round. Fewer is not being interrupted.
Should we read it as "interrupted by" like interrupted act?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 'Fewer interrupts by'sounds better.

      Delete
    2. tricky, imagine a comma (pause) fewer interrupts, by.

      Delete
    3. or fewer interrupt's by.

      Delete
    4. There is no prob there.
It is "interrupted by" on surface.
      "Interrupted BY" in wordplay.
      If x inteerupts y, x goes into y

    5. No problem with the wordplay.
In the above examples just replace interrupts with interrupte
A change in tense gave the same meaning

    6. Thank you all. Got it, but a little tricky- 2 different readings- in wp & surface- makes it a little difficult.

  4. For 27a, I too assumed Reverend for Bishop. But it's a good solve. BTW, nice to see our col. Mangrove forest in Pichavaram.

  5. EIGHTH of May.

Those in the ship were enjoying the NEW BORN pastime of the Captain as a SIDE SHOW.

He was dancing without RESTRAIN in a nicely fitting SAFARI suit and a FEDORA. The REVOLVER with initials JS EMBOSSED was cleverly concealed in one of the pockets.

A loud achoo and someone said BLESS YOU.

    Was it a signal?

    W hat happened next?

  6. I struggled with revolver for a totally different reason. I made an error typing mangrove and got an O instead of V in the slot.

  7. I visited Pichavaram last year.
Went on boat around the large mangrove, sometimes thru lanes in dark shadows when we brush off low overhanging branches so they don't graze our faces.

    5. Thanks so much for your wishes, encouragement and support Pradeep (well done, spotting the NINA), Vasant, Bhargav sir, KKR garu, Paddy and MB. Since I have set over 120 brand crosswords for the Hindu Business Line’s supplement, I reckon the total published grids is now over 150. Does feel very good to see my grids in The Hindu since the crossword was an integral part of my childhood and evokes a strong sense of nostalgia

    1. This is my Grid 1 Vasant - have used it many times including for my debut TH grid in March 2019 which also had a NINA.

    2. I must have missed making that in Excel(probably at that time I was solving in the free IA version).. But these grids are very Nina friendly(for want of any term I use the term "d4" for them, those that have no across clue in the 1st row as opposed to e4 those that have across clues in the 1st row)

Couldn't follow the anno of before 25.

    1. At home= in
25A- Censor, so 25A we hear is Censer (homophone)
In before Censer=Incenser who is a trouble maker.

      Delete
    2. 25 is sensor - otherwise the annotation is correct, The clue was also written this way so I could put “25” in the surface of the clue. There are a couple of other 9As that incisive solvers might’ve picked up :)

  18. Enjoyable puzzle, Hypatia. A number of homophones, which were initially confusing: 'gathered' in 22A, 10A: no indication of homophone, though 5D and 21D were clear.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Awesome Amita - Glad you enjoyed it, Homophone clues are generally out of my comfort zone and so I havent clued those much in my grids - I guess this grid is a notable exception

In 22A - “Gathered” is used in the sense of something you see /hear and then understand. Like one might say, “I gather you love crosswords” - (based on what I’ve heard from someone ).

As for 10A and other Spoonerisms, the standard indicator signaling the Spoonerism is the word “Spooner” or “Reverend”. It is understood usually that Spooner has said something which means the syllables of what you hear need to be switched - not what is written, Hope this clarifies - feel free to let me know if I didn’t understand you correctly.

  22. Congrats Sowmyaji on your 25th with THC.looks like it was just the other day that you had made a debut. May now march towards 50th.

I too got confused over Senser or CENSOR. I saw the homophone in Sen or in Cen sor. It's always a pleasure to get confusion worse confounded.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks Rajuji. With sensor - there is only one word that fits both definition -“Secutity feature” and wordplay - A say is needed with “Amartya” because he is not the only “Sen” - If I had used “say, Amartya” to clue “CEN”, it is wrong because that requires the solver to first get “SEN” from Amartya and then move to “CEN” - which is a two step process. That’s something I would not consider Kosher as a setter, Once you think that through, the parsing becomes obvious.
