Dr RKE's TalePiece

The Bamboo Bazaar you see today in Shivajinagar, Bengaluru has mostly wooden furniture shops and only one or two CANERs still in operation. About 40 years back, walking on the street, one could smell the ODOUR of fresh bamboo because there were many shop-cum-workshops here. Mohamed Sulaiman, owner of Ayesha Rattan Furnitures in this bazaar, had NURTUREd his business carefully for 25 years. His specialty was a sturdy cane jhoola (swing) with a soft PALLIASSE. There were many swings of all sizes stacked PRECARIOUSly on the front of his shop, but his errand boy, Jaffar, could pick out the one you wanted even as Sulaiman saab engaged you in a banter. Since you can't ENGRAVE letters on bamboo, they would only stick a label on the sold product but Sulaiman would assure the buyer that even without the label, his swings could be identified by their unique workmanship in the unlikely event of any repair.

This proud craftsman of high SELF WORTH was in a turmoil as he aged. He had no BIOLOGICAL heir to hand over his business to, as his only son employed in the merchant navy, was killed in a shipping accident off ATTU island near Alaska. Many similar shops in the vicinity had closed down, unable to face the competition from modern wooden and steel furniture shops but Sulaiman did not FOLLOW SUIT. A commercial property developer who had acquired the neighbouring shops, wanted to demolish the half-century old buildings to build a huge furniture showroom and was OUT FOR Sulaiman's BLOOD, irked by the old man's refusal to give up. ROWDIES had been sent to threaten Sulaiman. They roughed him up but in spite of sustaining fractures in his ILIA, Sulaiman refused to COW down. His erstwhile errand boy Jaffar, now a grown man, was there to ASSUAGE Sulaiman and looked after him as his own father. Sensing his end was near, Sulaiman, who had paid Jaffar only a meagre STIPEND all these years, called him one day and handed over a document neatly typed in DOUBLE SPACING. Sulaiman had bequeathed the shop and the business to Jaffar with the condition that it must not be sold as long as Sulaiman was alive. I gather INFORMATION that Sulaiman died shortly thereafter. Jaffar has sold the old shop and moved to Sultanpalya, where he continues the tradition in a newer, bigger place called "Sulaiman Cane Zone".

    4. Sathya,
No point in giving it without annotation. It spoils the fun. Many can guess it with crossings, but we do cryptics only for the pleasure of getting the anno.

  4. Great going Doc. Absolute enjoyment and fairly fast also. But had to give up on Engrave & Precarious (carried away by the aptness of Republican- enjoyable wordplay) Once I got these from the blog, finger bowl suddenly appeared to clean my messy fingers!

  7. I always have a doubt. Does one annotate to derive the solution or solve and then annotate for clarity ( that aah feeling ). Today I did not know the word PALLIASSE but by sheer annotation I could derive. Today Dr.X was very helpful with known English words.
    Advise please.

    1. In most cases we get the answer from the wordplay and annotation. In some case the answer comes to you first especially when the crossings are available in which case the annotation comes out later

    2. I think it is a mixture of two. Percentage may vary from person to person. In certain clues, the wordplay handholds you to the solution. In certain others, the definition gives you the answer and fit in the wordplay.

  8. What is naughtiness?
    Are those clues really naughty?
What level of naughtiness do you allow in clues?
Can a person include SEX KITTEN in THC and write a clue for it?
Would you or any woman solver be offended

    2. This word is said to be vulgar and hence the setter writing a clue for this word may have to be ready to face the flak

    5. Oh! I didn't know that. Maybe I missed to see this episode.

    6. Nothing naughty in these clues.. If by naughty one means coarse or vulgar.. I didn't see the clue for Sex kitten but was privy to the aftermath.
There was a huge uproar here following the clue of Trollop and later one clue by Phantom. The comment on the clue by Phantom(by a commentor who commented on The Trollop clue and the Phantom commented only on these clues and never again commented on any good clue, bad clue or any other clue) forced Phantom not only to set again but also he has never after that come on any crossword fora.
      Sad.

    7. To reply to CV Sir's question, I wouldn't be offended at all. There is a crossword, Cyclops which appears fortnightly in an English magazine, "Private Eye" that has the most risque clues... Any other clue compared to the Cyclops clues would appear mild.

    8. But of course what is acceptable or not differs from one to other. One cannot be too profane or obscene..

  9. naughtiness, naturally, varies from setter to setter. They are their own guides as to the limit. Of course, the idea is to make the wordplay interesting and bring a smile on the face of solvers. Dr.X is fairly high up on the list and all of us welcome it.

  10. Only the other day my niece,a fresh MS (Ortho) who has recently started teaching, sent me her video lecture on Pelvic Fractures for my comments (I'm not a medical man), and today I get 21Ac which I solved in no time. I have sent her the clue telling her that the puzzle was set by a senior Ortho.
    Thank you Dr. X.

  11. The Agent wanted to finger Bibek to the ROWDIES. To BE OUT FOR BLOOD was his mood having been sacked.

He ran towards the port and the rowdies did FOLLOW SUIT. Alas! The INFORMATION desk informed him that MV Antares had set sail an hoir before.

The Captain after finishing his dinner dips his hand in and out of the FINGER BOWL. He then EASES himself into his NIGHT GOWN.

Just then the door opens. And in the shadow he sees a figure in a PRECARIOUS demeanour....

    What happens next?

    Not I Sir, Not I.
It is all a state of mind and all that I can say is that the dividing line is very slender.

  16. What's naughty about PALLIASSE & NIGHTGOWN? Are we in a Victorian era ? If BRA denotes support, Y-FRONT is for mens briefs, how does NIGHTGOWN sound naughty ?

It's all underlie baat hai. If you think a word is naughty , that thought is purely from your naughty mind! As you think, so you see!

As usual, a thoroughly enjoyable grid. HAIRDRESSER brought dancing letters in an anagram. Great, Doc.
