Dr RKE's TalePiece

The ANTIGUA national stadium at St.Johns is so close to the sea that on a quiet day, you can hear the GURGLES of the Ayer's Creek, when in full FLOW, SLUICing into the sea. CHICAGO FC, the famous football team was to play Antigua in this picturesque stadium.Jack Smith, the captain of the visiting team was admiring the view from the ORIEL in his hotel room, when a sexy SIREN, walked in through the open door of the room. She hugged him from behind and much to his CONSTERNATION whispered something into his ear. She left in an INSTANT. At first Smith thought of CALLING the police, but he wasn't sure if it was only a FALSE ALARM. He certainly did not want to have EGG ON his FACE and EMBARRASS his team. Smith went AT FULL TILT to the manager of the FC who TOSSed ASIDE the cup of NOODLES that he was eating ON THE TABLE and paid full attention to his captain. The manager said "Jack, you play your game, I'll look after the matter".

The manager conferred unofficially with the Superintendent of the Police, whom he had BEFRIENDed at the welcome party, the previous evening. The SP had not an IOTA of doubt that the LASS had been sent by a bookie, who would have lost much if Chicago FC had won the game. She had tersely told Smith "Watch out, baby. You lose today, I'm all yours. You win and you are dead meat". The police chief, removed his BERET, stroked his balding pate thoughtfully for a while and said "it is an OPEN AND SHUT case. Go, tell Smith to play well, I can FISH out that DAMSEL and also the creep who is behind her". The SP, an ex-GRENADIER in the British Army, swung into action as only an army man can. The girl was picked up sunbathing on the beach. The SP made a short work of getting her to squeal. The bookie was booked and while ON THE GO,  they picked up evidence of many similar offences in the past. The lightning action by the cops prevented a DIRE IMBROGLIO.

  2. good one doc.
10d felt like a dialogue from National Treasure. I could picture Sadusky saying that.
"husband, leaving girl upset" for ER shows the challenges of a setter!
I like "that girl" to just "girl" for her. just my preference.

  6. Thanks folks! Thanks Ramesh for the meticulously detailed blog as ever. It is a pleasure to see the purpose of every word laid out in such detail!

Re 13D Full (adverb)= directly, squarely, straight, right, exactly colloq. bang, smack (Chambers).

As in... the ball landed smack/full in the middle of the terrace... he hit him full/smack in the stomach etc.

  7. The SIREN went off...

In that very INSTANT the MV ANTARES was ON THE GO. And soon IN FULL TILT towards CHICAGO leaving behind Salalah.

Elsewhere the Agent was in DIRE straits. And his EMBARRASSMENT could be well imagined.

His was an OPEN-AND-SHUT case and there was no IOTA of doubt that his pink slip would be lying ON THE TABLE.

    What happened next?

  8. Signature words of Dr.X (cocaine, husband etc) in place today. Naughtiness index lower than usual today. Only 23D passes muster in this department. Not too easy, not too tough is my verdict. So will find acceptance from the novice to the pro.👍👍

  9. An easy fare from the Doctor's repertoire today. My COD is 11across.

  10. As pointed out by Dr RKE, the naughtiness index was less. Missed the fun on that aspect.

  11. So naughtiness is expected in Doc.'s CW. Solvers will only ask'Why not so naughty today?"

  12. Today, there was no clue left for solving.

  15. Thanks, Dr X for another terrific puzzle. Re our discussion yesterday (I have since replied to your remarks and CV sir's questions), 8D: BEFRIENDING as a synonym of 'supporting' illustrates what I was trying to say. When I search my mind for synonyms for 'supporting', 'befriending' wouldn't have come to mind. The rest of the clue, and the filled-in cross letters helped provide the answer.
In 23D: SIREN, is the word 'upset' needed?

    1. Hi Amita! Re 23D 'Upset' is the down reversal indicator so ER becomes RE.
      SIN around (-h)ER <-- to get SI(RE)N

    2. Strangely, befriending actually means become friend to help or support. Not just (FB) friend.

    3. Oh yes, thanks! Sorry, I shouldn't have asked that.
