    1. 14A. I think {Sm...y} should not be there?

    1. Maybe Hypatia meant Anagram of SOB<< I,TOREUS or SO(I)B TOREUS. Touch of indirection there maybe ?

    2. I thought it is BO[ISTEROU*]S< and about being on double duty

    3. I think 'Sadly' i the anagrind for both "Sob about one" & "Tore us". Then,
      SO(I)B becomes Bois
      (Tore us)* becomes 'Terous'.

    4. The clue seems to have been revised - The original clue was "Loud sob about one taken tore us sadly (10)".

  5. I have a doubt about 4D. Bright is supposed to lead us to 'Shone'. Is it the correct synonym? Shone is a verb and bright is an adjective.'Was bright' would be better?

    1. 4D and 5D as published, appear to have been changed. The original clues read

4D Part fashionably black, was bright outside (4,4) and
5D Loud sob about one taken tore us sadly (10)

I have sent an email request to the crossword desk to revert to the original clues for these in the online version.

    2. 4D Your original clue was correct. Use of 'Shone' for 'bright' is wrong. It should be 'was bright' or 'looked bright'

    1. Slovenly can also be used as an Adverb. Please refer Collins - The third usage listed. It is also listed as a synonym in Thesaurus.net

  8. I think slovenly is only careless/lazy. say,he is a slovenly boy. He is slovenly in appearance.
