ReplyDeleteYou are very right!
Delete(see) followed by (Dx2)? Very clever!
DeleteBravo! Well solved Sritri ππ
Delete16a is CD? A candle or (a diya) singes and therefore, a singer's tip would be its wick
ReplyDeleteIndeed Sohil. Good solve ππ
Delete24AC My guess is NEAR AND HOW as spoonerism
ReplyDeleteBut it does not go with the crossing of 14D. I had it as Col.did.
DeleteNear (at hand) and How to Hear and Now.
DeleteI rarely get the rev.Pl.don't spoil it!
DeleteYes KKR and Padmanabhan - It is a Spoonerism of “Near” (at hand) and “How” (Question) for Here and Now
Delete6d the clue reads (art G) amidst pride. Esp with "on".
ReplyDeleteBird in painting, top of grass, amidst lions
Would read better.
Just my opinion subject to correction.
I see what you are saying but then that isn’t a convincing or smooth surface. This clue took me a lot of time to write and the way I imagined it is ART is on (above) G - which together are “amidst” lions. The use of “amidst” is to indicate an element of interspersing. If it was still confusing or did not parse correctly, apologies.
DeleteLiked Dog show & partridge among a few other good ones. Good exercise for the grey cells in the morning. Thank you Hypatia.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback Paddy. Good to know which ones you liked.
DeleteA DELUGE of cases....
ReplyDeleteFurthermore in this PART of Asia, the GROUND RULES are NEGLECTED by the population at large. This HAMPERS the breaking of the chain.
People exchange the news in hushed CONVERSATIONS instead of SEEKING Government help and the vaccine.
An urgent change in our mindset is needed HERE AND NOW.
Another topical story CGB. Well done indeed. Story writing requires special talent and you certainly are “Endowed” with it. Miss the cartoons :)
DeleteSpot on!
ReplyDeleteWhile my attempts to solve 1A, 10A, 17A besides 1D, 3D and 7D were in vain until I accessed our blog, I was tricked by 26A since the conventional spelling is DARGAH and not DARGA. Or is it that the compiler Hypatia went by the oral aspect of this word?
ReplyDeleteClarifications from our learned members, please...
Thanks
Both Darga and Dargah are listed in Chambers
DeleteThanks Sreeni. Yes, Darga is listed as an acceptable alternate spelling in standard dictionaries Sureshji.
DeleteThanks to both of you....
DeleteTake Care & Stay safe. Cheers!!!
25 A - could it be seem also?
ReplyDeleteIf we take the definition as just "look", yes. Seem, d*2=m being contextual, seems right. Look for gives seek.
DeleteExactly - Def is “Look for” and SEEM, doesn’t work as a synonym there. It does work for the wordplay. This is the great thing about Cryptics - both wordplay AND definition components have to point to the answer,
DeleteSeek seem(s) to be closer to the definition. M is also thousand.
ReplyDeleteMany wonderful clues. Fly-by-wire very well hidden. Struggled to get the answer and could see wire alone in the clue and wondered how come. Blog opened my eyes. Great work, Hypatia!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Glad you had fun with it.
DeleteSo many clever wordplays!
ReplyDelete3D, 25A were my favourite. Loved this crossword
Hello to my namesake :) Thanks for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed this grid.
DeleteNice grid
ReplyDeleteMany good clues especially Dog show, conversations, Lasso
In 4A I thought a politician blocking that woman not the other way around?
Electric signalling system chiefly by wired channels (3-2-4) FLY-BY-WIRE [T]
Here I think "by wire" is not clued properly since same roots in "by wired..." and "by wire" part of "fly by wire"
Also liked Varanasi clue π
Thanks for the feedback Ajeesh. Nice to see you back commenting in the blog too.
DeleteBlocks can be placed around to stop someone coming out - so that was the intended usage - I have seen it used in clues in this fashion as well but would be happy to see what others think about this.
In the definition - “fly by wire”.actually means “fly using electric/electronic wire messages” - and this replaced the physical cables/wires that were used before. The intention from the surface point of view was to have an extended definition. Your point is fair though and do let me know if there are other words that would have worked in place of “wired” in the clue.
I think my first fully solved Hypatia grid. Thank you !!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful. Well done Maya :)
DeleteMe too. My first fully solved Hypatia grid. π
ReplyDeleteThank u. Great puzzle.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gowri and good to know you completed it too :)
