    1. 10a @setter, considering ark is a noun: shouldnt there be an indicator!

      Delete
    2. @Sree Sree why should there be an indicator when craft is a noun as opposed to a verb? It serves as a verb in the context of the surface reading and as a noun in the wordplay parsing. It seems the dual role of "craft" in this sentence is intentional and integral to the cryptic nature of the clue itself.

      Delete
    3. How does craft as noun lead to ark?

      Delete
    4. Craft = boat = ARK (like Noah's Ark)

    6. From Chambers 3.A large floating vessel as esp (usu with cap) Noah's in the biblical Flood (Genesis 6-8).

Capitalization is needed only in the context of Noah's Ark, while ark itself can be used for any nautical vessel

      Delete
    7. Craft also works as a noun in the same sense as ark above

      Delete
    8. craft (sense 3 of the noun), originally in the expression small craft ‘small trading vessels’, may be elliptical, referring to vessels requiring a small amount of ‘craft’ or skill to handle, as opposed to large ocean-going ships.

Craft in this sense is a differentiator within a class of boats/ships.
It would be equivalent of cluing man to hint woman! Both are human!

  31. Nice pangram from Hypatia. Missed her grid last month. Interesting grid with plenty of 4- and 5-letter words, and the occasional cheeky wording. Nice wordplay for CHAPRASSI, and good use of "craft" as ARK. I enjoyed 17A "changed what happened at noon? (7) AMENDED".

My main complaint about today's clues would be in 5D "Old fellow fractures finger in the present (8) OFFERING" in which I must point out that OFFERING is "A" present and not "THE" present as indicated in the clue. THE present would indicate that the definition is for "now", or for a specific present from prior context, which is lacking.

CHAR as "daily" seems dated but acceptable I suppose.

Nice to see the setter reference internet-culture in many places.

      Delete
    3. Or
Old fellow fractures finger 'as' present.

      Delete
    4. Or
Old fellow took finger as present.

      Delete
    5. I would prefer "Old fellow fractures finger 'as' present", rather than using "took", as "fractures" is the anagrind while took does not indicate anagram.

      Delete
    6. @Rao Pilla's option also has the benefit of not using the debatable "[Wordplay] in [Definition]" syntax with the directional "in"

      Delete
    7. I simply go by the all the purpose " 's".
      finger's present.
The stands out between wp and def.

      Delete
    8. But if one has to accept "in" to mean found in, seen in types:
We might as well extend that to "found in the"

      Delete
    9. I have another doubt- is 'fractures' a proper anagrind?

      Delete
    10. Technically fractures does indicate anagram. But the clue has to stay as published for the sentence to make sense.
      My final take
Old fellow mistook finger for present.

      Delete
    11. Thanks Economizer. Colonel - Appreciate if you could add the "Pangram" label as well. Glad to know which clues you liked.

I see the point you make with respect to "the present" vs "present". As noted by Colonel, the clue loses cryptic reading when you replace "the" or any other connector as can be seen in the thread.

Also, "fractures" is certainly a valid anagram indicator - in the context of cracks/breaks. I am not sure why there is a doubt about this (Padmanabhan sir at 16:24)

On WP Def - many professional setters have chimed in on this. Also please see Bhala (XChequer)'s comments on the subject.

I have seen it widely used both in clue writing competitions and published grids and don't think there should be any issues in using it as such.
