ReplyDeleteI enjoyed some of the charades such as 15A {AB}{ROAD}, 32A {OBE}{Y} and "boy wearing spectacles" for {OBO} in 27A. 5D was hardly cryptic. 6D had me thinking about snakes & LADDERs, a game in which the board looked somewhat like a crossword grid. Quoting from Wikipedia: The name "corundum" is derived from the Tamil-Dravidian word kurundam (ruby-sapphire) (appearing in Sanskrit as kuruvinda).
ReplyDeleteThe word "small" could have been deleted from 20D, leaving the clue technically correct. As a DD, one of the definitions in 25D was "where the camper" which isn't grammatically correct, although if you read the clue as CD&lit it works.
20D- small is meant to get op from operation.

DeleteI think 'small' adds to the difficulty of the clue. Without it, the clue becomes easier than it is.
