Small nitpick regarding definition of "cats" for PETS in the solution. When something specific in the clue points to something generic in the solution, it is better to be marked as an example. Same treatment as using proper noun in the clue to denote common noun in the solution. Something like: "Starboard cats, say, looking back to avoid"
Re: 23D FLORAL = {FLORA}{L}, see this article for the reason why this is a weak clue (hat tip to Prasad for sharing with me). https://www.crosswordunclued.com/2009/10/why-bengal-i-doesn-fly.html
Didn't watch the movie, but there's a similar series on ott. Looks like the anno has to account for a little more space(y), pit(t) along with freeman. Don't have a convincing anno to account for every word used.
I think it is DD. Let me also take stab at the anno. Movie - SEVEN with(casting) a little more(lacking last letters in this case) space - kevin spaceY in, (also) the pit - brad pitT for the(?) free man - Morgan Freeman

29ac. FLOPPY OLD HATS.. floppy..fashionable
Hot lads*
29a FLOPPY OLD HATS = Hot lads
ReplyDeleteThe phrase used to refer to Bohemian youth in the 60's and 70's (thanks to Google)
Parsing is not complete. It is RA with Floppy being anagriand.
ReplyDeleteFloppy old hats= (old hats)*= hot lads
Get it, thank you
DeleteDoesn't floppy mean the opposite of fashionable?
ReplyDeleteLooks like a RA of hot lads to get FLOPPY OLD HATS meaning 'unfashionable vintage headgear'.
One of the meanings of floppy is loose or flexible and floppy as anagrind is listed in Chambers CW dictionary. So floppy old hats is hot lads.
ReplyDeleteI am referring to 'fashionable' in the definition.
DeleteI guess all clues have been answered
ReplyDelete26a, not explicitly but implicitly
ReplyDelete'Fashionable vintage headgear' refers to floppy old hat- refer to Ramachandran above.
ReplyDeleteThe anno for 26a is too twisted and not clean.
ReplyDeleteI am sure it would be criticised severely.
