Kishore's cartoon - before someone asks which-da - on Hooda reminded me of the hilarious email spoof on a conversation between president George Bush Jr and Condy Rice - 'Hu is on the line'.
ReplyDeleteCertainly inspired by that and all other Chinese names like Wen, How etc.
DeleteThere was another one from Benny Hill show. A Chinese dragon performer is called up by someone on the stage at a show abroad, 'Hey, you!'. The guy removes his mask and shoots back, 'How you know my name?'
DeleteBut I made this 'Indi'-genous
DeleteHa HA! Nice toon da.
DeleteThanks, da. Also inspired by an old Kannada reference (I do ot recall its origin) where a person tells " that's our King and an elephant." On being asked further, he clarifies, " the one on top is the king"

ReplyDeleteMukund why the bat?.....Are you a bacardi fan?
ReplyDelete@Kishore is the da (pronounced as in the hindi dak) similar to the Bengali suffix da (pronounced as in dada) ? Please enlighten as it is modtly used in Karnataka, right.
The following is an entry from the Glossary givena t the end of the book 'From out of Clay & a few other stories of Narasiah' translated by C. G. Rishikesh (myself) and published by Palaniappa Brothers, Chennai:
DeleteQuote
Poda - ‘Po’ in Tamil means ‘go’. The –da termination may be used when an elder addresses a younger male or among male contemporaries or out of disrespect to the male who is addressed.
Quote ends
I think it was in Mouna Ragam, the Tamil movie, that in certain comic scenes a northerner is made to utter 'Poda madaya' - which means 'Go, you fool!'. As a language lover wanting to spread the knowledge of our vernaculars, I couldn't appreciate those scenes.
'da' is pronunced as in 'faluda'.
Thanks CV, so the usage is present even in Tamil. I thought it was a karnataka phenomenon.

ReplyDeleteThe German word for Yes is Ja.
ReplyDeleteDa is used for Yes in Russian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Karelian, Macedonian, Serbian and Slovenian.
