    I put this as (-s)LUMP
    YAHOO is the definition.

    1. That seems to work too. We will have to await Neyartha on this tie.

    2. I can say authoritatively that N's answer matches with that of K's.

  3. Re the Sunday prize puzzle posted on this blog yesterday -

I have received ten entries so far.

Some of the regular suspects are yet to be seen.

And what about some from others among the nearly 500 members?

Are the avatars at left permanent? Or do they keep changing as and when the so-called members visit this site? Can you see a complete list of members somewhere without having keep clicking the sets at left until you reach the end? Can an owner weed out the membership if he so wishes?

Avatars are permanent. They don't change with visits. Complete list cannot be seen. I cannot weed out membership even if I wish.

  4. I have just found that by clicking on the dual rectangle on top right of 'Followers', we get the list of members. But, at a time, we have only 24 members. For others we have to keep moving. There is no 'search' facility to check whether a particular name is in the list.

    1. Isn't it a pity that there were only 10 entries so far? What happened to the regulars? Why are they fighting shy?

We all are regular commuters in this blog whereas there could be occasional pickup of passengers along the way, randomly entering and leaving at various stages.

I read about the other competition being run. Hows it going? Is it ongoing? Now that I'm back to base, can I also join the rest? Is it easier now to log in for that?

Only Col can throw light on the number of hits on this blog and separate the chaff from the grain. Why has he not responded to your query? is he out elsewhere?

    2. I was away from home that's why the delayed response. I can tell you the no of hits and no of visits in a day.

You can enter the other competition by registering at the site

  5. I was scratching my head on a couple of clues today.
10A: How is a recommendation an initiative?
22D: How is rat and grass the same?

    1. Initiative: suggestion, recommendation, action, lead, first move, opening move, first step ... from Chambers

Rat traitor, grass (Brit. informal), betrayer, deceiver, informer, defector, deserter, double-crosser, quisling, stool pigeon, nark ... from thefreedictionary.com

    2. The British term “grass” means, roughly, “to snitch.” The use of “grass” as British slang for a police informer dates back to the 1930s, and is a short form of the slang term “grasshopper,” which in turn is a rhyming slang for a “shopper,” one who “shops” (sells) information to the police.

  6. I have a small query. When one sends in a comment as a reply, does it get read, as it goes below the blogger's comments? Or is it better to write in a fresh comment, which appears separately?

    Replies
    1. That depends on the reader whether he scans up and down or reads only from the last comment which he read in which case he will miss out on the replies

    Please visit above.

Once registered, you can still enter the competition and in the succeeding rounds you have a chance of winning the weekly prize if your entry is no. 1 with full 100 points. You may not be able to make it to the final, though, as you are starting late and have missed the earlier rounds.

Please visit all the pages there to become conversant with rules, current status of competitors, etc,

  9. I concede it was over-enthusiasm that I included part of the 19d solution FLOATER as a tool in the list of themed answers. The idea had just 'floated' into my head ;-)

  10. Yes, I noticed and wondered about it. But having come from Kishore I decided there must be something more to it that I do not know and wanted to search around a bit later!

  12. 7 A Not 'about' had me initially in a quandary. It probably lacked an ind. because 'ca' (though it is not exactly in that order) also could have been removed.
