  5. 23 - Union that is seen in lodge (3-2) - TIE-UP {T{IE}-UP<-} No reversal indicator?

    lodge = put up = PUT<- = TUP
    IE in TUP = TIE-UP (union)

    mnemonic
    ...(in pl, treated as sing) ...; a memorizing aid...

    Suresh, I trust the above extract answers your query.

    1. Actually I am not so sure from what you have given above. The online version of Chambers gives mnemonics to mean as follows:'2 (mnemonics) a the art of helping or improving the memory; b a system for this.'

      Loosely speaking I have no problems with it. Just picking a nit. (a fun-spoiler, as I have said earlier)

  8. Just now noticed that 'ob' part in the word 'obsession' in the printed version of the crossword is in italics. This is a quirk in printing that I am quite unable to explain.

    Second of models appearing in dreadful stuff (5) - VOILE {V{O}ILE}

    VOILE is a type of fabric so took the keyword as stuff...

    1. I found this on website called crosswordman.com, which gives a glossary of crossword terms. Light is given as meaning 'A horizontal or vertical series of white squares in a Grid, in which the solver usually enters one Answer.'

    2. For 'light' Chambers has the following meaning, among others:

      in a crossword, the word (or sometimes an individual letter in the word) on the diagram that is the answer to a clue.
