ReplyDeleteis V to see? not clear how V comes in the clue?
as in veni, VIDI, vici or even vide as used in footnotes to mean 'see'
DeleteVeni, Vidi, Vici is I came I saw I conquered. So Vidi is I saw. But why V for see? Still not fully convinced with use of V for see as per your comment.
DeleteThe 'see' likely refers to the Holy See which would be the Vatican, and is usually abbreviated as V in cryptics.
DeleteThe V comes from - vide (Latin) : See, consult, refer to
DeleteCV, your quote yesterday about Bobby Wickham brought back fond memories. Reading the passage one gets an idea that young Wickham is a bit of alright, but when I saw the video rendering, I was a bit disappointed by the actor playing that roll. Instead of the expected oojah-cum-spiff female, we had someone who fell short of expectations.
ReplyDeleteTalking of oojah-cum-spiff, I had once corresponded with one such, suspected by me to be Spiffytrix, but while the person admitted being spiffy, denied being up to tricks.
Role, not roll, in above para

ReplyDeleteWhen you say HO, only head office comes to mind. Maybe, CV can change the clue accordingly-at least for us!
When Wodehousians hear the word HO, they think that the speaker is a policeman...
DeleteWhen my friend phones me from Surat, he always says "What Ho" instead of hello, as he is also a Wodehousian from our college days.By the way, he is not a policeman, thankfully!
Delete16 - Reportedly feels engineer's getting big counting jobs (8) - CENSUSES {CE{NSUSE}'S} Anno not clear
ReplyDeleteReportedly feels is census (~senses)

Suresh will remember, we from Stanes School Coimbatore have a different solution to HO.
ReplyDeleteHO Fowler fondly known as HO was the Principal of our school for a long time.
Spooner would have loved to say 'FO Howler'...
DeleteDid not know that Fowler's nickname was HO. People used to say he used to foul a lot in the inter-school sports event, like the inclined run-up for the pole vault.
DeleteSounds like Fowler was foul-er too..
DeleteWhen Kishore has a holiday, we get a lot of howlers!
