1 Early records of his involvement in survey of politicians (4,9) CAVE HISTORIES {CAVE} {HIS}{TORIES}
ReplyDeleteI took this as CASE HISTORIES.
Case a joint= survey a place
+2
Delete8 What some soldiers get to fight weariness (6,7) COMBAT FATIGUE {COMBAT}{FATIGUE} Normally known as 'COMBAT FATIGUES'
ReplyDeleteI thought Arden referred to the war-weariness and not the uniform
That's right. Having never been to actual combat, I've not experienced it!!
DeleteCol, a typo in 20A anno.
ReplyDelete16A - I thought 'returned' was for gave, but then it will mean no reversal indicator.
15D - O stands for examination in the long list.
I took it as CAVE as CAVE HISTORIES though not a regular phrase was more suited to 'Early records' and moreover thefreedictionary has this
ReplyDeletecave: Brit school slang
n
guard or lookout (esp in the phrase keep cave)
sentence substitute
watch out!
[from Latin cavē! beware!]
'Cave' is a Latin term which means 'Beware! Look out!"
Delete'Cave canem' means 'Beware of the dog'.
Caveat emptor=buyer beware, and caveat, the legal petition are also from the same stable.
Deleteagree with this too, but as a phrase 'CASE HISTORIES' seems to have a better ring to it. Could be either really.
DeleteAnd 3D - is 'without' the right word there? Others to contain 'the French men'. So is without a container indicator?
ReplyDeleteothers - ET AL
Deletewithout = outside (a container indicator)
the French = LE
men - MEN
Defn: are essential - E(LE)(MEN)TAL
The easily overlooked grammatical error creeps in here ('are' as the connector doesn't work)
Delete16 Tramp mostly returned by rail (7) VAGRANT VAG{RANT} Anno for VAG pending
ReplyDeletereturned = GAVE BACK = GAVE<=
mostly returned = GAV<= = VAG
by
rail = RANT
Defn: tramp - {[-e]VAG<=}{RANT}
Felt 19 dn is incomplete.
ReplyDelete20A- small typo- it is 'apar' instead of 'spar'.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I've since corrected it
DeleteI have a doubt about 11A-
ReplyDeleteCan 'services' be synonym of 'aces'? Only a few of the services can be aces, but not all.
15D-
ReplyDeletedoctor 'freedom freedom after final examination' to get 'endoscope'? Second meaning could be it gives doctor some freedom in his diagnosis.
Felt something's in 24 a and 19 d seems incomplete.
ReplyDeleteMeant 24 ac seems a bit odd.
ReplyDeleteCol.'s anno for24A is quite clear.
ReplyDeletePuts back- stup
(see if)*- efies
So is 19D
Difference is Anind.
Anno was not the problem, the sentence in esp. 19 dn seemed incomplete.
DeleteNice clues eg. 5,19,& 25d escalate to the defined destination.1 & 16a really brain teasing ones.Overall a thorough entertainer.
