  1. Nobody seems to do this CW, but wait for the special only. Thank you Col. for clearing many of my doubts. Awaiting Afterdark. Should be good going by past experience.

  2. I have noticed that the Sunday crosswords (from Guardian) use the following construction: A on B = BA (e.g clue10A)

Whereas in regular TH, I have seen instances where A on B could mean either AB & BA.

Not sure if both are deemed acceptable or if A on B in the strict sense, should lead to only BA.

    Thanks !

It is rather difficult to locate something remembered in a book read long ago but luckily I landed on this once as I, lying in bed, was idly opening pages in the book 'How to Do The Times Crossword' by Brian Greer:

    * "on" in an across clue means following rather than preceding when used to indicate the juxtaposition of parts of the answer, as in:

Fastening that comes undone is a problem on undergarment (8)

This is a convention in The Times.

The following clue is given by Don Manley in his Manual:

Headgear on communist evokes intense dislike (6)

(It is not indicated as a Down clue.)

As far as THC is concerned I think we can have it both ways. What do others think?

If you are stuck with any of those two clues, call 04428352341 for answers. Usual rates apply.

    1. Thanks for the explanation with the examples and the link as well. I think I have both the answers which serve to explain this point.

I have no problem with A on B meaning AB or BA in either type of clue as is the case with THC. After all, it is one extra permutation to consider for the solver and offers more freedom to the setter.

But I was not sure if I was missing something as I had consistently seen A on B = AB in the sunday features. I must have noticed this in all across clues. This clarified it.
