  1. Thresher or Thrasher, the fodder does not match.

  2. 5 Farm machine’s harsh rate briefly adjusted (8) THRASHER Anno pending. Shouldn't it be a Thresher? Something's not right here.

    HARSH + R(-a)TE*

    Both spellings are right.

    1. [harsh + rat(-e) ]* is what the wordplay seems to suggest. which doesn't lead to thrasher or thresher.

    2. Sandhya,

How did you remove a from 'rate'?

    2. from thefreedictionary.com:

      dead centre
      n
      1. (Engineering / Mechanical Engineering) the exact top (top dead centre) or bottom (bottom dead centre) of the piston stroke in a reciprocating engine or pump
      2. (Engineering / Tools) a pointed rod mounted in the tailstock of a lathe to support a workpiece Also called dead point.

      Chambers also gives Dead Centre.

But Wikipedia gives CENTER as you suggest.

All of us would expect the answer to be THRESHER.

However, the wordplay (if we interpret 'briefly' to mean 'remove the last letter of the following word'), leads us to THRASHER after the required jumbling..

Now the question is: Is the spelling for the farm machine correct?

All that I would say is that there is dict. support for thrasher = thresher = farm machine.

I don't know if Neyartha will visit these parts.

How? HARSH + RAT has no E in it to spell THRASHER. Like Sandhya mentioned if we discount A from RATE, we get THRASHER, but the wordplay doesn't work. And that is the source of my confusion.

    3. Now that you mention it, I see where the problem lies.

I didn'th analyse the wordplay as I ought to have done. I thought that the argument was whether 'thrasher' is a farm machine (as we are all used to the more common 'thresher').

My observation was limited to the fact that the spelling thrasher too is correct.

I had failed to work out the anno. Apologies.

Is NL: Netherlands same as the Dutch (which is either a language or their people)?

    1. Dutch would be of the or relating to the Netherlands or its people.
So nl being the internet code for Netherlands may fit in.

    2. Going Dutch...

Much before the Internet happened, NL was being used in international vehicle registry. Perhaps also in telex messages.
