  2. That was
    One MOOD lifter,
    & No! I am not a LIAR;
    It felt like sailing in a ROWBOAT,
    Under clear blue skies with a RAINBOW to boot;
    Such fine INTERPLAY of words,
    There was no question of any HIT & MISS;
    With this your REPUTE & RENOWN may rise,
    As we SWEEPBACK the earlier fiascos, showering u with praise.

  3. Teasing and testing as always. I always start DrX with long ones, the c&dd gets me going.
    Disrepair is new to me and
    New felt extra (though technically correct but finishing off mislead for a while) in 8d.
    Wouldn't the clue work as well with just "finishing off hard cheese"

    1. I think it is required to get stern from hard and then remove N.

    2. Missed the cheese. Looked heread got the answer

    3. I also had the same doubt as sree_sree. I thought "finishing off hard" itself would give STER from STERN (so was confused with the "new")

    4. Probably it was meant to confuse the solver and also for being specific

  6. Dr X grids are a BREEDING GROUND for stories here's one inspired by today's little tough grid for me.

    The invader expected his troops wearing WAR PAINT to return quickly SMASHING the enemy in a short skirmish. However after a few of his HOMING PIGEONs crashed the MORALE was down. The war is prolonging leading to DISREPAIR. It's effect is felt across the GLOBE.
    The world SOLICITs intervention by a peace keeper with ADEPTNESS. Would be a great RELIEF as the resources world over are WHITTLEd.

    It's time to ASCERTAIN the cause and end this. Is it a SMEAR campaign against a leader? Or a conflict over the DOGMAS of a group? A feeling of being SHADOWED all the time?

    Peace efforts are failing. The PRELIMinary efforts didn't find a solution. Something EXTRAordinary is needed: say a LANCELOT to step out carrying a banner for peace. Or an EDIFIER saying the WISEST do not fight if NOT HAVE A PRAYER. Perhaps a model clad in UNITARD inviting the leaders to a WATERING HOLE. Something with ROMANCE. Or a bomb dropped uncovers a Δ’EODE with minireals distracting the troops from war to exploration.

    Whatever, GOOD GRIEF, not any longer.

    Let's hope the Ukraine war ends soon
