6 - Yesterday Parisian youth was excluded from ranking. Roguish! (4) - ARCH Anno pending
ReplyDelete(-HIER)ARCH(-Y)
Hello all
ReplyDelete6A - Put down ARCH by way of sheer guess. The ranking suggests a word beginning with ARCH..., with the latter part deleted. Maybe someone can out with the answer.
Liked SMILED. EARLY BIRD was easy. ESCAPE ROAD, ENCRYPT, HEART'S DESIRE etc were good clues.
@ Suresh, good one.
ReplyDeleteHi Col. - it is one of the best Gridman's puzzles that I have tackled so far!
ReplyDelete6 AC (-hier)ARCH(-y)
HIER -> Yesterday in French (Parisian)
Y -> Youth
Both excluded from HIERARCHY -> Ranking
ARCH -> Roguish
Simply Devilish Gridman :)
Hi Anokha,
ReplyDeleteLong time no see. Back again from one of your creative pursuits?
After a long hiatus, ace solver Anokha comes out to solve yet another Gridman:
ReplyDeletehttp://anokha-hinducrossword.blogspot.com/
I don't know what other creative pursuits Anokha follows but I think that Anokha makes frequent business trips out of the base in the US.
ReplyDeleteNot exactly, Col. - but I wish I was! Trying my best to get back to some creative pursuits ....
ReplyDeleteWe pick up a bit of foreign language from CWs
ReplyDeletee.g., hier, aujourd'hui et demain (Fr)
for yesterday, today and tomorrow (our own kal aaj aur kal)
Vasi Sir - I'm just a part-time solver but you, Shuchi & Col have a license to pull my leg :)
ReplyDeleteBTW, how do you rate this one from Gridman?
PS: Bingo on travels - I am more out than in. I get out of one jetlag and get into another one :(
7 D - Teacher goes north for German dish
ReplyDeleteCan somebody please explain how Risotto was arrived at ?
Teacher = Sir
ReplyDeleteGoes north means reverse the direction - RIS
German = OTTO (a german male name)
to give RIS OTTO which is a dish
Krishnan,
ReplyDeleteSir in reverse (for teacher i reckon)
Otto is a German name
Risotto is a dish
Thanks Satya, I was breaking my head over North mentally trying with letter N.
ReplyDeleteAnd, mind you, RISOTTO is an Italian dish!

Have to agree. This was one of the best crosswords in recent memory. Some of the clues were very wily and intelligent. Missed out on a few arch, auricular, scopes, hamlet and smiled. Can anyone explain smiled please? do take a bow GRIDMAN for this flawless puzzle. Perhaps others can learn how to make crosswords.
ReplyDeleteWhen someone is going to take a picture(snap) they request you to smile, to which request you agree and smile.
ReplyDeleteoh good lord!!! Thanks for explaining Coljee. Its like those perception things where u always see the old woman and not the young one unless one points out the outline to u. Was not even remotely thinking of the secondary definitions of snap. Excellent clue.
ReplyDeleteToday's crossword puzzle was sheer heaven. Kudos to Gridman
