Hi
ReplyDelete18d Catharsis was a nice clue, though I had to go to the dictionary for Albigensians. Also had
to confirm chapfallen 8d. 23a LORAN (LOng RAnge Navigation) reminded of LRDG (Long Range Desert Group) of WWII, which was nicknamed ‘The Mosquito Army’ by Gen Archie ( I have un’bald’ed him !) Wavell, and which had an Indian squadron. 2d Send off was nice.
14d Screw loose was the first thought, but didn’t fit in. Still pondering.
Shawnee is a American Indian tribe. In 22d, clothes could have a meaning only if dud or gone was enveloping the other, otherwise seems trivial
ReplyDeleteGood morning folks:
ReplyDelete22D - Resentment at clothes gone off dud (7) - {DUD}{GEON*} What are clothes doing here? Can anyone explain how this clue works?
I took it as DUDGEON as the meaning matches. I have a feeling 'clothes' is intended to 'dress' the word, to indicate an anagram of 'dud' and 'gone'.

ReplyDelete@Kishore
ReplyDeleteIndian Indians would protest if they are classified in tribes ;-)
@ Col: A large number to clamour to get themselves included in Scheduled Tribes list ! Irula notwithstanding, Onge, Lambani, Bhil et al
ReplyDeleteOnce in a Quiz contest, the question was asked 'Who is a true Red Indian'. The teams tried with names of different Red Indian tribes. After they failed, the last team in exasperation said' "An Indian Communist". "Bingo" said the quiz-master.
ReplyDeleteGood one, Venkatesh.
ReplyDeleteAnother wild guess:
14D - Suggesting the head of the house is slightly deranged? (5,5) - ?L?T? LOOSE
Fish-plates enjoining rails, if loose, would put trains off-track. Anything to do with getting deranged? PLATE LOOSE? Does it sound ridiculous?
No clue about the head of the house.
@ Venkatesh: JB, who passed away recently, is considered the last true Red Indian, the colours of other 'Red'Indians being suspect for various reasons.
ReplyDelete14D: Maybe deranged=loose, head of house=h, suggestion is definition of some word
ReplyDeleteIf 'h' is to be accommodated in ?L?T? set-up, the word could be CLOTH. Loose cloth is OK, but cloth loose?
ReplyDeleteAny further brain-racking is likely to put us in a deranged state.
CLOTH LOOSE may also fit in.
ReplyDeleteH & LOOSE are OK.
How do we get CLOT?
@ Richard: Cloth and Sloth appear to the only options. Time for me drive off; I shall be passing Nimhans, maybe they will accept me on 'as is where is' basis, otherwise I can always use the name of IgNoble Chit Andrade to gain admission(!)
ReplyDelete@ Venkatesh: We are head of our house, and we are Clots ;-)
ReplyDeleteFor those who haven't heard of NIMHANS mentioned by Kishore:
ReplyDeleteNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HEALTH AND NEURO-SCIENCES, Bangalore. Chittaranjan Andrade holds a top post there.
"How do we get CLOT?" - Vemkatesh
ReplyDeleteBy breaking our heads on eerie clues like this, we are likely to get CLOT in the brain.
FLUTE is a third word that would fit in.
ReplyDeleteChit is also the winner of the IgNoble Prize a parody of the Nobel prize, in 2001 for his medical discovery that nose picking is a common activity among adolescents.
ReplyDeleteAll of you are wide of the mark.
ReplyDeleteTry SLATE.
Also the idiom is A SLATE LOOSE, not SLATE LOOSE.
As you know, 'slate' is a slab of this material that goes on the roof of a house.
I only suggested what the answer is.
ReplyDeleteNo comments on clues as such.
Good morning
ReplyDeleteJust as clothes used to cover the body here it covers the words dud and gone is my wild guess while i fill it up.
still looking for the five letterword as you all
Mathu.
@Mathu,
ReplyDeleteChaturvasi has given the answer to 14D as SLATE LOOSE in the post preceding yours
Omigosh ! How could we miss SLATE ?
ReplyDeleteThose of us who began our 3 R's on slates prior to the 1 Kg and 2 Kg regime should have remembered that.
Besides that SLATE is also involved in expressions like slate blue colour, clean slate etc. Interestingly enough, SLATE as a verb has two different connotations.
British Eng. 'to criticize severely' - e.g., "The MP's public demeanour has been slated in the media."
US Eng. 'Slated' = expected to succeed in securing a particular post etc. "Jenkins is slated to be Republican candidate." or expected or planned to happen at a point in the near future. "The local body elections are slated for September later this year." "A large number of buildings in the area are slated for demolition at year-end."
Curiously, I have observed that the US expression is more in vogue in India than the British.
@Richard,
ReplyDeleteI liked the 1 Kg and 2 Kg ! Must show it to my wife, the hard core KG Teacher now KG co-ordinator
@CVasi sir,
ReplyDeleteThis is what distinguishes an expert from amateurs.
Here, to have a slate loose is used in the meaning 'to be eccentric or crazy'. The origin of this is from the thin sheets of slate used in roofing. Were a slate to become loose, it would render the roof slightly defective. Hence, this became one of the many phrases used to describe a person who is a bit simple.
Interestingly, 'slate' figures in a number of phrases:
Having a clean slate means having a record without dishonour
On the slate is used for on credit
By wiping the slate clean, we intend to make a fresh start, especially by forgetting past differences.
We say 'he is slated to go far' when we mean that he is destined to go far.
Other usages include:
To cover (a roof) with slates
To enter (a person's name) on a list, especially on a political slate
There is also the colour 'slate'

@ Chaturvasi: Hats off to you, sir. We must have been on the tile(s) to have missed the slate.
ReplyDelete@ Richard: We used to use 1kg (in our 1 kindergarten ) chalk with the slate, consume mebbe 250gms for writing, 250 gms for eating (some of us at least), 250 gms for chucking at one another, and balance 250 gms was invisible wastage.
