  1. Good Morning
Erode turns up again in 9d, though as an example and clue, French again in 11a (yesterdays dit means said in French), Greek again in 7d, Spanish Arroyo in 22d (reminds me of westerns like My Name is Trinity series, Sudden series and Joe Millard’s Man with No Name series (also called Dollar Series, which includes For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, A Fistul of Dollars, A Coffin full of Dollars, Blood for a Dirty Dollar, Million Dollar blood-hunt et al which were initially based on the sphaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone but carried on beyond his movies)), Medical staff again in 8d, Oink turns up again in 18a, two legal usages: writ in 24a and Scales of Justice in 1d.
Based on averages, Sherlock Holmes would say (wrongly, of course) that Gridman is a pig farmer near a creek in Erode who has just undergone medical treatment and is fighting legal cases with French and Greek importers of pork.
A nice double pun on leading pupils (both as students with good marks and eyeballs at the front of the class) in 16a

  2. Hi everyone

There it is ! 9S - ERODE pops up yet again with a vengeance. Gridman must be having a quiet chuckle and looking forward to some digs here.

15A - Unpleasant sound in palatable packaging

    3D - TENFOLD (-t) - ENFOLD - Very good.

    Liked 1D, 2D, 8D, 19D and a few others.

  3. 6d, I put down ’wardrobe’ too but anno not clear: Minor=ward, dress = robe, but press=wardrobe? Could be Linen-press, used for storing textiles

In ET: 11d In summer he always gets the bird (4), 25a Come to light after dark (4), 17d Swimmer back from practice in the river (4) and 22d Sick of finding what’s not source of water? (6) are excellent

  4. @ Richard:
Girl: Goenkara tum chokra, dekhne ko diktha hai bakra
Boy: Ami BokDe vokDe khaina, khata Goacha Dukra, hi chokri kiya nakhra

Quote from a Goan Konkani-Hindi remix song by Peter and Lorna Fernandes in direct response to your comment on oink

  8. All those pigs reminds me of Clarence Threepwood, Lord Emsworth of Blandings and Whiffle's book on pig care.

  10. One of the many things I like about Gridman creations is the way he suggests a word jumble.

    E.g. 5A WASTE disposal, 7D EACH composition.

  11. For Non Konkanis: The verse read:
Girl:You are a Goan boy, and look like a goat
Boy: We dont eat goats in Goa, we eat Goan pigs

  12. In 27d, Arroyo (creek in Spanish), Gridman uses catching for enveloping one Nil=0 with 'Arry (Cockney) followed by another nil. Here Catching is used just like Richard notes about disposal and composition.

  13. In my 840 post please read pig-farmer instead of pig farmer, the wrap around is creating a nasty situation (sorry Gridman)

  14. 2d: Did Shatrughan Sinha have a shotgun wedding?

  15. All seems quiet on the crossword front
Gridman evokes less of groan and grunt
    With Manna, Neyartha, Sankalak
We can have fair bit of luck
Then for ten days we've to bear the brunt.

  16. Shatrughan Sinha's wife Poonam SInha is a one-time Miss India. She was also his co-star in one of his lesser known movies. She acted recently in 'Jodha Akbar' - she did one of those mother roles.

I come by all this info honestly - I lived in Bihar in the 80's.

I happened to see the country list after a long time in the clustermap. It is very very impressive. Congratulations. I have been doing THC only for a year now ( due for an anniversary bash shortly with some patialas) and I feel honored to be in this group which shares knowledge so freely. I am probably one of the very few mumbaikars in this group.
