Good Morning Col. and All: came here just to be see what you thought of 17Ac - glad to see that triangulation is what it should be.
ReplyDeleteAlso, on 16D: understand TE and canmen*, where does the addn'l "T" come in from?
Thank you
Veer
16A has an extra T, which doesn't figure. Then I saw the name Manna and decided that it's normal
ReplyDeleteThat should read 16D
ReplyDeleteT -> bill as in T-bill (Treasury Bill)
ReplyDelete12 ac STEE? -> Ladder
Hello everyone
ReplyDeleteThe top left corner took a longer time.
Agree with Col and Veer on 17A.
Liked 14D, 18D, 21D.
13D - There is a play with 'deadly' from 'deadly nightshade', but I feel there should have been a hint at the name of the tree. Can someone explain?
Well, going further into some clues of debatable quality:
ReplyDeleteShould 11Ac as defined be competency?
I have not checked all dictionaries but wonder if 3D is an incorrect DD with choice = preference and share = preferred, in a reference to a preferred share as opposed to a common share, or as the Col. indicates choice share is a CD.
@anokha:
ReplyDeleteNice touch on 12Ac. - I think you are dead on ( you already knew that); Merriam Webster does concur with you.
On T = T-bill, will grudgingly accept - will the clue type be a semi &Lit in this instance?
@Anokha,
ReplyDeleteIf T is from Bill then only 'into law' is left as the definition
Manna from the sky continues the food thread and also brings in the limerick quoted in this blog a few days earlier.(Food turns up again in 25a Spaghetti, Cha twice in 6d,14d, the Llama and Lama having starred in the limerick lately, appear in 21d. ). Proves Big brother(s)/sister(s) is/are watching this blog.. Not happy with 12a Stye and 17a Triangulation is what I thought of, then left it blank. Someone had mentioned that he/she had asked a setter to include Blog and Colonel and that wish was granted although by a different setter.
ReplyDelete@VEER
ReplyDeleteCompanies in India have Preference Shares as per the companies Act
Col. - I took "Passing Law" to be the def as "enactment" is just passing law .......
ReplyDeleteThanks, Veer!
Contd: Centring on food and this correspondence of ideas and convergence of requests, may indicate that the two are atleast in touch with each other....
ReplyDelete@Deepak.
ReplyDeleteLaw would be enactment. So def would be law
I start my list of my favourite servicemen with Sqn Ldr Ramesh Rao, who joined as a Flight Sepoy in 1944 and retired in 1976, carrying on for 4 more years on extension. He was in Calcutta ATC during WW2 and later flew in a Dakota as signalman, earning his commission en route, and also being active in 1965 and 1971 . He was posted at various places including Hakimpet, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Hindon and been to various places abroad on duty I remember him bringing his Vespa on his plane to Yelahanka and riding down to Bangalore (usually staying at the Trinity mess). Presently over 80 years, he joked to me today morning that he had drawn pension for 34 years, longer than his active service of 32 years. A thorough gentleman and perfect serviceman, a role model for my inspiration to the Air Force ( I used to spend my summer holidays at AFS Hindon in the 70’s)
ReplyDeleteThe word enactment would mean a statute or law.
ReplyDeleteThe passing of a bill would also be termed enactment
12 - Youth set out to climb (4) - ST{Y}E* To climb ???
ReplyDeleteAccording to Wiktionary & YourDictionary, STY/STYE = to climb/ascend (obsolete)
When the scenario is dull, a bit of humour.
ReplyDeleteReceived this forward in mail this morning. Thought of sharing with you all.

@ Richard: Wow. 1412 tigers are endangered.
ReplyDeleteBut then the population of Tions and Ligers should increase!!!

ReplyDelete@KISHORE
ReplyDelete1412 will include tigress population also.
Will tigress also cheat or only Tiger?
Could someone please enlighten me as to where'Lawrence' fits in 'enactment' and what it can mean elsewhere?
ReplyDelete@Sumitra,
ReplyDeleteTE are the initials of TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and appears frequently in Crosswords.
See Lawrence of Arabia
