Hi
ReplyDeleteMala’s friend Indu stars today in 4d, albeit without an Indic indication. To all those who believe wood floats in/on water, here is an eye opener. E-BONY sinks. I have a warrior carving of this and it is quite heavy, though I cannot demonstrate the sinking for obvious reasons.
For Navneeth, (carry over from Sat): The number at the end of the runway would be 09 (always 2 digit format) seen as 60 from your perspective and would indicate you are flying due east.
Indu, of course, reminds of Sam and 'Sweetie' !
ReplyDeleteSome time back there was a reference to the film
ReplyDelete"Madrasapattinam" this Forum. This film was shown on Kalaignar TV last evening.
Really an off-beat film.
Thanks to all those who referred about this film here.
Frequent interruption of ads spoiled the pleasure of viewing to some extent, though.
.
A Very Happy Birthday to the guy who fills our lives with joy through 13as...
ReplyDeleteCOD : Measure by state to increase intensity (4,2)
ReplyDeleteI found the usage of ...a people...in 20A jarring.
Thank-you to DS who called me to let me know the film was on. Else, I would not have seen it.
ReplyDeleteWe should probably record a film and later watch or re-watch it - having skipped the ads. while recording it.
All the equipments are there but few of us use them intelligently - if we use them at all.
Kicked myself for not"storm"ing the troopers,in spit of the fair weather clue.More so,since I was able to complete the rest and missed getting 100%.Best clue? Liked 9d.

Kishore,
ReplyDeleteI could not not understand the connection between 27 & 09 in the runway problem. Can you pl. explain?
CV sir,
ReplyDeleteMany Happy SNRUTER* of the Day.
@8.48, sir, my pleasure.
On recording and rewatching: I record audio directly from TV of almost all Devotional music, Discourses and Carnatic music concerts almost daily the latest being the concerts of MMU 2010
and Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaaru.
Happy Birthday CVasi sir.
ReplyDeletePaddy, runway numbering follows the nearest 10 degrees of the compass, starting with N as 0/360. The opposite end would be 180 degrees higher/lower. Hence a runway in West-East direction would be 09/27 with 09 at the eastern end signifying 90 degrees and 27 at the western end signifying 270 degrees. A N-S one would be 18/36 with 18 at the southern end and 36 at the northern end. 00 is not used. When there are more than one runways near each other on the same alignment, then suffixes like R or L are used as in 27R to signify the right hand one when approaching from the west.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed today's crossword. Have been doing them on my iPhone for the last couple of months, but happy to be back on my terrace with the actual paper in front of me. Favourite clues are 13A and 8D
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, David! Here's to a pleasant stay in India.
ReplyDeleteI happily recall my meeting with you at Hotel New Woodlands. Thank you for sparing the time.
As for that terrace of yours, where is it? Chennai or Kochi or where?
The terrace is in kottayam. But my daughter is in chennai, so will be spending my time betwixt the two. Very happy to be back in india!

The above clue is so neat, though ONE is given to solvers for free and the container is an abbr. of a familiar word which also is given on a platter (instead of 'sibling' or 'kin').
What lifts the clue is the smooth surface reading. It is plausible. The c/c ind is very apt.
This kind of effortless writing can come only from one who must have been a solver of UK crosswords for years before being invited by some publisher to try his hand at setting crosswords.
This word 'boner' in the sense of 'mistake' I learnt years ago when I found "A Book of ... ... and Boners" in my father's library. Now I don't rememebr the full title. The book had actual examples of typos from the printed pages of UK newspapers.
Padmanabhan met me at home and I had a pleasant conversation with him. Once I have visited him at his house in T'nagar.
ReplyDelete@Chaturvasi: A Very Happy Birthday to you!
ReplyDeletePaddy, have you been living long in T Nagar. I used to live there in the early '60s at Madley Street.
