    It is IM(-a)M UN E

    Shiite leader = IMAM
    out of a = IMM
    UN
    E

    Re as in 'touching' on a subject in a letter

    8 - How to cover the headless doll completely? (6) - {H{dOLL}OW} Are 'hollow' and 'completely' synonymous?

    Sometimes, as in beaten hollow

  3. How to cover the headless doll completely? (6) - {H{dOLL}OW} Are 'hollow' and 'completely' synonymous?

    I think this is in the sense of someone being beaten hollow meaning beaten completely.

  10. Bhavan, we seem to be tandem-ming !

    ReplyDelete
  11. Did think of defeat but was defeated on how to unseat the journalist

    ReplyDelete
  12. That is when one is beaten hollow like I am generally with this series, but just 'Hollow' and 'Completely' hmmm..... they look more like opposites to me when seen independently

    ReplyDelete
  13. Deepak at 843 has put it just right :-)

    Regarding, clues, I am not sure whether we should talk of surface reading or verb noun agreement...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Bhavan, I feel completely hollow or should I say hollowly complete ?

    ReplyDelete
  15. @Kishore, me too. Wholly holey.

    Reminds me of Raaj Kumar in Pakeezah:

    --(from memory)

    Aap ke pair bahuk haseen hain, inhe zameen par mat rakhiye, mailey ho jaayenge

  17. Please read as bahut instead of bahuk

  18. 9 - Shine on the Italian chimney cabinet set disappeared long ago (10) - {IL}LUMINATE Anno pending

    I might ask NJ to give me an award for decoding these ...

    Italian = IL
    Chimney = LUM (http://www.wordwebonline.com/search.pl?ww=6&w=lum)
    Cabinet - BC(long ago) = INATE*

  27. Words fail me .... Reckon I am going to maintain radio silence for the next few days ....

  28. This CW has been overwhelmingly rated poor. Actually I don't think it is really that bad. No major goof-ups today. I thought it was okay

    ReplyDelete
  29. Regarding yesterday's 1626, the answer is TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia)

    Regarding rating, yesterday's outstandings and today's poors, both, in my opinion, reflect extreme views...

  30. 26 - Writing material (10) - CHALKBOARD ? [CD] Material?

    If paper can be a writing material, why not a blackboard. Or even the wall, the mud in the garden, the dusty windshield, ..

    ReplyDelete
  31. Treasure you left back inside the flower holder outside (5) ??
    Surface..Didnt get the anno too.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ajeesh. Vase is flower holder

    you left is U L Back is reversal indicator for U L

    Out side for deleting S. How side is abbreviated as s is anybody's guess

    ReplyDelete
  33. I kinda agree with Suresh. It wasn't really that bad. In the end, I was 4 short of completing the puzzle... mostly decent clues. The typical handful of clues out of left field tend to spoil it for some.
    My COD = HERBAL. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. and oh... anno for loud:

    UD = buddy regularly
    LO = ordeal de-termination ...gives O and L.

    I suppose NJ figured that as long as it's "de-termination".. the order doesn't matter and we can fit it either way without any reversal indicator...
