IM(-a)M-UN-E

Sometimes, as in beaten hollow
How to cover the headless doll completely? (6) - {H{dOLL}OW} Are 'hollow' and 'completely' synonymous?
ReplyDeleteI think this is in the sense of someone being beaten hollow meaning beaten completely.
5 - Mostly identify the same place one first arrives in the African state (7) - {NAMe}{IB}{I}{A} IB and 'same place'?
ReplyDeleteIB from ibidem
5 - Mostly identify the same place one first arrives in the African state (7) - {NAMe}{IB}{I}{A} IB and 'same place'?
ReplyDeleteA further abreviation of ibid ?
My COD is 24D. Good DD.

ReplyDelete8 - How to cover the headless doll completely? (6) - {H{dOLL}OW} Are 'hollow' and 'completely' synonymous?
You beat someone hollow, meaning completely
Bhavan, we seem to be tandem-ming !
ReplyDeleteDid think of defeat but was defeated on how to unseat the journalist
ReplyDeleteThat is when one is beaten hollow like I am generally with this series, but just 'Hollow' and 'Completely' hmmm..... they look more like opposites to me when seen independently
ReplyDeleteDeepak at 843 has put it just right :-)
ReplyDeleteRegarding, clues, I am not sure whether we should talk of surface reading or verb noun agreement...
Bhavan, I feel completely hollow or should I say hollowly complete ?
ReplyDelete@Kishore, me too. Wholly holey.
ReplyDeleteFools rush in where angels fear to tread :-)
ReplyDeleteReminds me of Raaj Kumar in Pakeezah:
--(from memory)
Aap ke pair bahuk haseen hain, inhe zameen par mat rakhiye, mailey ho jaayenge
Please read as bahut instead of bahuk
ReplyDelete9 - Shine on the Italian chimney cabinet set disappeared long ago (10) - {IL}LUMINATE Anno pending
ReplyDeleteI might ask NJ to give me an award for decoding these ...
Italian = IL
Chimney = LUM (http://www.wordwebonline.com/search.pl?ww=6&w=lum)
Cabinet - BC(long ago) = INATE*
Thanks for ILLUMINATEing us, Bhavan. I think you should join the ILLLUMINATI !
ReplyDeleteBhavan,
ReplyDeleteNow that you found it LUM is there in the Free Dictionary as well
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/lum
For me, the only easiest clue! 16D
ReplyDeleteDS-ibid?! I wanted to use the new word I learnt today!

mathu
Why not use stars to rate the puzzle?
ReplyDeleteWords fail me .... Reckon I am going to maintain radio silence for the next few days ....
ReplyDeleteThis CW has been overwhelmingly rated poor. Actually I don't think it is really that bad. No major goof-ups today. I thought it was okay
ReplyDeleteRegarding yesterday's 1626, the answer is TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia)
ReplyDeleteRegarding rating, yesterday's outstandings and today's poors, both, in my opinion, reflect extreme views...
26 - Writing material (10) - CHALKBOARD ? [CD] Material?
ReplyDeleteIf paper can be a writing material, why not a blackboard. Or even the wall, the mud in the garden, the dusty windshield, ..
Treasure you left back inside the flower holder outside (5) ??
ReplyDeleteSurface..Didnt get the anno too.
Ajeesh. Vase is flower holder
ReplyDeleteyou left is U L Back is reversal indicator for U L
Out side for deleting S. How side is abbreviated as s is anybody's guess
I kinda agree with Suresh. It wasn't really that bad. In the end, I was 4 short of completing the puzzle... mostly decent clues. The typical handful of clues out of left field tend to spoil it for some.
ReplyDeleteMy COD = HERBAL. :)
and oh... anno for loud:
ReplyDeleteUD = buddy regularly
LO = ordeal de-termination ...gives O and L.
I suppose NJ figured that as long as it's "de-termination".. the order doesn't matter and we can fit it either way without any reversal indicator...
