ReplyDeleteT(ASK)ED
Three continuous Ls in 16d
20A ELICIT CIT may stand for City Improvement Trust?
ReplyDeleteHORROR is probably a CD meaning something which produces intense fear like a horror movie.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kishore
ReplyDeleteCol Saab,
ReplyDelete1.AC. plese explain what AM represents ? Does USING mean borrow ?
Ramaih It is 'am using' which is a reason for not wanting to lend a tool.
ReplyDelete27A There are shorter spiders too in Billiards
ReplyDelete21 - In semi-panic, the fool turns into a dead end (7) - {IMP{ASS}E*}
ReplyDeleteIt should be {IM(PAS<-)SE*}
the fool SAP turns <- in SEMI* (panic - AnagrInd)
True to type 'Mannaish' cluing. For example Semi-panic(21) if it is meant to be an anagram of semi cannot be imps(probably Manna went into 'panic' while cluing). Similarly for 28 the word play that is translates to ie, but in the solution it is 'ei' with no AInd. I presume 'breaking' is the AInd for rules and cannot apply to both ie and rules since they are placed on either side of it.
ReplyDelete@venkatesh -guess our posts crossed. I buy your explanation for 21
ReplyDeleteThank you very much,Suresh,for entertaining my question. Does this clue come under DD category
ReplyDeleteSuresh@8.14
ReplyDeleteI think the "eight foot"does not refer to length since the spider as shown in the figure is just a rest.It is the live spider which has eight feet.
Of course, Padmanabhan. Could not think beyond half butts and full butts.
ReplyDeleteSome brute force and guesswork was the order of the day today, and annotating was a post facto exercise!
ReplyDeleteA lot of red herrings not relevant to the clue thrown in by Manna for good measure to confuse! eg in 1A where is the need for 'your tool'?
17D is my CoD, got a lot of pleasure in solving that
Ramiah@09:45,
ReplyDeleteDoes this clue come under DD category
I don't think so, since the answer is clearly 8 letters long. A DD is a single word or phrase with two different meanings. (AM USING != AMUSING.) Compare this with READ A STORY from yesterday's grid.
Isn't a tramcar more of a self propelled device? Filled it in and got stuck.
ReplyDeleteBhala@13:30,
ReplyDeletein 1A where is the need for 'your tool'?
I guess it would make a bad surface, one with an abrupt ending, without it.
1A is odd. Am in place of I am or I'm? I've never seen it done outside chatrooms.
ReplyDeleteIs `on' a good link word between wordplay and definition?
In spite of all the difficulties already mentioned, this was a vast improvement over yesterday's puzzle, at least for me. I had TERROR for 18A.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I should have added, that was wrong!
