  1. 15 - Threatening finish behind mischievous lad (9) - IMPENDING {IMP}{ENDING}

    Reminded me of Bertie Wooster's feeling of Impending Doom.

    18d. Went up the same blind alley as Deepak.

    Slightly confused with pic for 26a, is it a altar base or alabaster balcony/altar base...

    14d Confused here too: PI for police inspector for copper is fine, but the word before replacing v with pi is avarist, which has to do with avarice and not aviarists, IMO.

    Odd headline in TH today page 6, Bang Ed:
    New broom proposes sweeping changes

    Reminded me of the gaffe in a Brit paper:

    The bride and the broom came out of the church.

  2. 14 - Copper for vanadium can turn bird enthusiasts into beekeepers (9) - APIARISTS A(-v+pi}PIARISTS

    Here copper = p = penny, so the replacement is P for V in Aviarist

    Has the epaper Mint been made a subscription-only website?
    Is the Orkut community that was solving its Friday cwd still on - after the subscription has been paid up by someone?
    Curious to know.

    1. Hadn't noticed that before.

      I solve the mint crossword whenever Vinod or Tony put up a notice about it on their twitter feed. It has a direct link or photograph to the puzzle.

    2. I had written to Vinod for the Puzzles so that they could be posted. He, in turn, is in contact with the paper for the same, as he is not a subscriber himself.

  5. After a long time, tried THC today. Completed in about half an hour. Felt better. Only ESOTERICA took a little longer. Liked many clues. Could hit upon quite a few at first glance.

    Just wondering what will remain of the woman (in the pic) in the above ad by a slimming centre.

  8. Perhaps depict harbour light (7) - PORTRAY {PORT}{RAY}

    Why 'perhaps'? Perhaps is used generally as an anagrind.

    Filled in 'unfolds' and had to look for a change after getting the obvious 'easel'.
