Re 15d: How nice to get to know of this rare word!
ReplyDeleteI understand that the term DEHISCENCE is from the world of botany. What I further learnt on looking it up in BRB is that its origin is from a Latin word that means 'gape'.
To solve crosswords you should know words. By solving crosswords, you can also learn words.
Very satisfying fare from Sankalak.
ReplyDeleteAt left today Gridman and Sankalak are on equal terms!
ReplyDeleteLeaving aside statistics from a certain date when the Col. started 'tagging' his posts, Sankalak joined the setters' panel long before Gridman did.
The problem with such good puzzles from Sankalak is that it leaves very little to discuss :)
ReplyDeleteSankalak never disappoints
ReplyDeleteAgree with Bhavan. The more you are happy & satisfied, lesser the comments.
ReplyDeleteFrom Chemistry Sankalak has branched off to botany today. A very nice word, though it needed help. But that is how one learns.
Clue 12a reads: Astringent lotion, but not for women? (10) for which the answer above is AFTERSHAVE.
ReplyDeleteIn the latter part of the clue "but not for women" is the setter not au courant?
In supermarkets we do see razors specifically targeted to women clients. Just as men now have hair removing cream specially for them (though I really don't know what ingredient is removed from ora dded to the regular one).
I imagine that if a woman uses a razor, she might want to use an aftershave too. I don't know if any special aftershave for women is in the market.
Maybe he too was thinking on the same lines as I am doing here!
Is there any way by which unwanted hair from the face can be transposed to grow on the pates of baldies ? Not a bad bald demand? very queer and contradictory human species, we are indeed. Shave off unwillingly the facial hirsuteness every day unfailingly but bristle at the thought of receding hairlines thatresults in one having more face to shave including the scalp as a whole !!
ReplyDeleteBear like growth all over the body and yet we are knights in shining pates.
Whither, you scientists and doctors out there, who will come up with a solution (pun intended) for alopecia?
It hit an iceberg largely concealed, dropping headfirst (7)
ReplyDeleteThe above is a clue from a UK newspaper yesterday.
The answer was much in the news recently, with TH carrying archival material on an event involving it.
A novel clue type, with deletion from something derived by telescoping letters in the clue.
Have you come across this clue-type before?
Interesting and topical clue. A modified T clue I guess. But then, what's in a name for a clue as nice as this one
DeleteIt is common to have two clueing devices combined in one clue right?
DeleteFor example 5D uses a deletion + anagram.
May be we can call this a deletion + telescope.
Like Suresh said, nice clue nonetheless.
We may call it a "DELEScope"
DeleteIt does go under &lits - the entire clue providing the definition and a wordplay. A sensational &lit, given it was a concealed iceberg that sank T and T fell head first!
