    3. Col, the def is every second:alternate. It becomes alternative when four is allowed.

    4. Col, ALTERNATE (9) (every second) is the sol, wordplay being it becomes ALTERNATIVE (an option) IF IV is introduced. Your original ans was perfect. It is the inputs by readers that has caused confusion.

  3. Many Aha moments. For example I could not parse Orangutan.Mayor was simple and nice.
Barrage balloon was new to me.
Is it 'Netball'? In tennis it is called 'Let'. Any other sport?

    1. I know it, but it does not go with 're- serve'. What is meant is if it touches the net,it calls for a re-serve. My question is if it is called a netball.

    2. Probably this should help Paddy:
      NETBALL:
A serve that strikes the net before falling into the receiver's court; the ball must be served again

  5. Thank you KKR,That is what I thought, but does it say in which sport? To my knowledge it is generally called a 'Let' meaning hindrance.

  6. Just cheeked up. Let is also called a net ball (as 3,4)- enu is also correct. Whereas as a single 7 letter word it is a separate sport.
