SAADHU seems more likely the correct spelling

    2. I had the same doubt. I had been spelling it as sadhu.

  9. Thanks, everyone, for your comments. Sadhu (as most Indians would like to spell it) comes in two avataars in the Chambers dictionary. The alter ego is a bit jarring for the Indian consumer, but it exists. Words imported into English from Indian languages sometimes end up sounding/looking a bit odd to the natives, but then, the English spell it as they think right, sometimes in more than one way. We sometimes return the favour by mangling their language...

  10. Hamilton Bridge in Chennai was called amattan (barbber) by the locals- as they heard it. It later came back to English as Barber's bridge! Translations and transliterations are always fraught with danger (and sometimes humour too)
Anyway your love (and frequent usage of) Madras is appreciates by us locals here' Thank you.
