    2. Thanks CV I was searching for it in Hindi and it kept going to the hindi meaning - River

      Delete
    3. In Tamil 'nadi', with both vowels short, means 'river'.

    4. Thanks for the link. It really opened up my nadi.

    5. 'Nadhi' would be better for river. "nadi' may mean 'to act'.

  2. 13A I think NADI is pulse and would possibly mean beat. I am not sure how nerve is pulse

    1. I feel NADI is pulse in both Tamil and Telugu (probably in a few of other Indian languages) and could mean nerve as well. In the olden days doctors used to feel the nerves above one's wrist for pulse.

    2. Now 'fitbit' does!
Incidentally, it's a long, long time since a doctor held my hand.
In the past decades they used to do routinely and unfailingly.

  3. In Tamil Nadu there is 'nadi josiyam' - I haven't had any experience of it but I am told the astrologer would even tell you what your name is. Has anyone here tried it? Does the astrologer feel the 'pulse' of the client?

    1. I think he sees only the face. I also have neither the experience nor the belief.

  4. I had the same doubt until I read CV's link. Probably, 'Nadi Josyam' is based on this.

    1. Though I know what a selfie is, first time I am learning about a Sparrow Face and a Duck Face!
Secondly I don't know why a Selfie of a group is known as a Groupfie when it can be very easily called a Groupie.
I liked one of the definitions for Groupfie "You get many idiots as opposed to one idiot"

    2. Reminded me about Bernard Shaw's definition about cricket- " 11 fools playing and 11000 fools watching" (though I am one among the 11000)

    3. Missed watching yesterday's "Virat" century

    4. It is disturbing to read news stories of people coming to grief and much worse while taking 'selfies'.
BTW, I have never taken a 'selfie' of mine.
Even without that, my wife has choice terms for my 'face'. [Snip]

    1. Usually the six grids appear in a cyclic order. There has been a shuffle for some reason that I don't recall immediately.

  9. 4D. The parsing is not clear to me. NEW and T are of course fine. How do we explain MAD?

  10. Being now in the US I get to solve the puzzle online by about 2 or 3 am India time and normally visit the blog a little late in the day. Sporadically I am affected by insomnia and hence able to join you all a little early.

    1. Mother (Dam) returning is 'Mad'.
Must be close to midnight there! Explains the insomnia.

    2. Thank you. For mother I could only think of ma. This is the first time I am hearing of dam to mean mother.

      Delete
    3. Caution: 'Dam' is "the female parent of an animal, especially a domestic mammal," so we had better be careful when calling Amma, unless we want to say 'Damn' in some context..

  12. I am a believer in astrology and I know the basics. I went to a nadi astrologer in Vaideeswaran Koil a few months ago to find out how they predict the things correctly. The nadi astrologer asked me to give just my date of birth alone and nothing more to fetch my nadi. He went in to fetch my nadi and after 15 minutes he came up with a bunch of palm leaves. For 15 minutes, he asked me a series of questions for which I have to answer "yes" or "No" only. Some questions will be like your name starts with ra, sa, tha etc. , is it a 5 letter word or less, 4 letter word or less, were you born in day time or night, is it before 12 after 12 noon etc. For many questions the answer can be Yes and No and one may blurt out the real answer for correctness of prediction. Finally, he will tell you correctly the day you were born, the moon star you were born, your name, your wife's name etc (which are easy to surmise once we give him the number of letters starting letter, last letter etc). Then he will tell you everything about you (most of them which he derived by asking questions or we blurted out) and at that moment we will be amazed how he is able to predict. But what I feel is, once he goes inside a room to fetch the nadi, he can actually get our horoscope using Ephemeris or astrology software and by asking me at what time I was born, he can fix the Ascendant (Lagna). Once he has these details, he can predict like an astrologer which is easy. When he predicted wrongly that my daugher-in-law will get a son (he was more than 100% sure as per nadi), I knew he is not able to guess correctly that time, as we already knew that she is going to get a baby girl (revealed by doctors at USA when she was pregnant). So, I don't believe in this nadi astrology. If any of you are going to try Nadi astrology, do not give your Date of birth and see whether he is able to get the nadi. Because once you give the DOB, it becomes a simple Horoscope prediction. He may zero-in on your DOB, by asking hundreds of question. If you dodge him properly and if he is not able to guess your DOB, he will say that your nadi is not available. This is my feeling about Nadi astrologer I visited. Others may have different view.
