  3. Does 4A need the "misspelt"? I thought it was an anagrind, but there is none required since it's just a substitution.

    1. 'misspelt' for surface reading

    2. I think it is needed. Dictionaries should have and they do have proper spellings. In the rate instance where there is a typo, we need to say the word is misspelt. BTW, I have indeed noticed a rare typo in a well-known dictionary.

    1. For those of our generation they are called 'bathroom chappals' Period.

    2. In India chappals/sandals are OK for most occasions, incl. office. What the col. scoffs at are Hawaii slippers or thongs. Bathroom chappals, which my dad as an air force officer at home, are quite different. They will cover the front part of one's feet in shiny black leather with just two holes for aeration. They won't do outside your house or garden.

    3. Nowadays these have become a lot stylish and colourful in contrast to the ones shown in the pic.

    4. CV, what you refer to were the bathroom chappals that were in use before arrival of the Hawaii Chappals

    5. 30 years back I started my career with proper tie and all and almost ending it with shorts and chappals #startup

    6. I will let our respected fellow-commenter Raju talk about thongs.

    7. I have a lot against wearing open sandals in India. In a Coimbatore mall, there is a shop called Methi adi ( I first thought that it is a she- adai made of Methi !) that sells these as spare parts with the base piece and diy straps attachable in different colours. They are very highly priced selling at Rs 1000+ ! We have the variety of wooden clods a la Ramdev maharaj . Then we have flip-flops known as Hawaiian or Singapore sandals. High fashion 'thongs ' worn by ladies strapping all around their feet which enhances ankles.

I am fully with the Col that these days we have casuals worn in offices. These are as a result of dress downs on weekdays, wearing Ts and jeans . Gone are the days of Booted- suited dress codes. Rahul Gandhi's 'bete noire ' ?

The hideous looking velcro-ons worn by men in Coimbatore with their dirty feet are unpardonable. These were the diluted version of the stylish Pathan shoes worn in those days. In tropical climates like in India one can pass off wearing open sandals , but must be with socks on as the roads are full of filth and in rainy season these cause foot diseases ( not of the politician's foot and mouth variety !) . I am always used to wearing proper closed slip-on I don't know why they are branded as hush-puppies !) footwears and use slippers only indoors.

As for CV's comments from me on thongs of another variety, I refrain , lest I tread on female toes ! I don't intend being slippered by them by their footwear or stabbed by their stilettos !

Today's crossie by buzzer had tricky clues and anagrams and was very enjoyable. e-shop and boson are nice to be seen in crossies .

  5. The dress code for SBI officers that was publicised recently suggested that they should wear proper shoes, not chappals, at work. Of course, the rules went to some extreme lengths by an overzealous prescriber. My own view is offices must have a dress code. But I have observed that even offices that do have a code are rather reticent/lax on dress code for women. It is those who are very concerned about women's rights, women's empowerment, blah, blah.

    3. I found many clues to be very interesting and shrewd. While I do the Hindu puzzles religiously everyday, I am not too keen an observer of details. I solve the puzzle, see the blog and forget it. Today, even to my casual self, the number of interesting clues was striking. Many thanks to Buzzer. I enjoyed his work.
